06.24.05: The California
Well. I’m b-b-b-back in Boston like Backstreet’s on the radio. Actually now I'm back in New York. Not New York as in “The City” (said with the classic pretentious overtone) but the real New York – that’s Upstate New York where the green grass grows and takes precedence over concrete. Before I go on about the benefits of Syracuse, I want to give a huge hug and thank you to everyone who came out to the shows in California. You guys were amazing and made me feel quite at home. The tour was really wonderful and the two weeks flew by as most trips seem to. My visits to Santa Barbara, San Diego, Santa Monica, Venice, and of course Hollywood were enriching and the weather was delightful (aside from the earthquakes which I seemed to sleep through). I must admit however that Los Angeles highway traffic makes the Big Dig in Boston seem like a barren, Neolithic village in Eastern Transylvania on a Sunday morning. But I guess you get used to spending 5 hours to drive 120 miles on “The 5” to San Diego. That’s the other thing that I noticed immediately – everything is “THE _______”. It starts to grow on you after a while.
Some strange things did happen to me while I was out there. If you would have told me before I left for Los Angeles that I would hang out with Andy Dick at 1:00 am in his private art gallery wearing 3-D glasses staring at 3-D art, rubbed shoulders with Paris and Nicky Hilton at a dive bar on North La Brea, and ate at In-AND-Out, I would have said you were mashuginah. After all, you know that I have a hereditary history of high cholesterol and a Double-Double isn’t doing anything to remedy the situation. Regardless, they were experiences I guess only Hollywood could bring. Oh, I also ate lunch next to the woman from “Species” - I found out later that Natasha Henstridge was her name. Google her; it’s worth it. I imagine that happens a lot in Hollywood. Thus, myriad conversations like this must go down everyday!
Jacob: You’ll never guess who I saw at Jamba Juice this morning?
Fred: Who? Tell me…tell me?
Jacob: Well, you know that guy who ran the lemonade stand in Lethal Weapon 2!?!?
Fred: Yeah!!! No way! No way!!!
Jacob: Yep, yep. It was him - I’m positive!
Fred: Wow Jake! You met the Lemonade Stand Guy from Lethal Weapon 2. That means he must have personally met Danny Glover AND Mel!
Jacob: Yep. Pretty huge star-spotting for my record books.
Fred: Man, Jake – you always see the stars. I’m so jealous.
There must be a reason these folks who sell the “Star Maps” on the street are still in business. People want to get as close as possible to Tom Selleck’s gated palace. I have to say myself that after a week on Sunset Strip, I starting buying into some of it. Pretty scary.
On a totally different note, my friend Bobby was nice enough to record a bunch of the live shows in California. You can download them at:

I haven’t gotten a chance to check them out but the thing I love about live recordings (that haven’t been altered and overdubbed) is that what you hear is what you get. All the quirks of that night are immortalized for better or for worse. I hope you enjoy them; especially folks who’ve been asking me why there aren’t more live recordings available online: here we go. Thanks to Bobby.
Well, I think I’m going to attempt taking a jog out into this uniquely hot Central New York afternoon. I think it’s close to 105 with the heat index. That’s the Upstate NY humidity factor. But you gotta love it. After all, there’s no place like home.
Stay cool (and in school – sometimes ,

P.S. If you’re still reading at this point, special shout out to Diana, Sam, Kaydee, Stacey, Tommy, Bobby, Lisa, Erica, etc. etc. the list goes on and on. Feelin’ the love.
