Hi! Me and my family are interested in getting another bird, and when we saw some lovebirds at Petco (don't worry, we're definately not buying from there, just picking up some seed First I was wondering whether you'd recommend one or two... I understand that they require a lot of attention, and I'm gone until about 4:00 in the afternoon and my mom is in and out during the day. There are my two budgies to keep him or her a little company, but I'm wondering if this is going to be enough. However I am really interested in bonding with him or her because I've read that they are huge cuddlebugs My second question was what size of cage I should get... I think I'm going to order a Martin's Cage online also wondering if lovebirds are big chewers? Thanks for all help! From Emi |

I own three lovebirds, Unless you are going to able to spend a good deal of time with your lovie I would recommend getting a pair (but keep in mind if you do get a pair they will probably bond to one another and most likely want nothing to do with you, you also have to take into consideration that if your pair turns out to be male and female you might wind up with babies.). If you are planning on getting a singleton I would recommend getting a handfed (Fully Weaned!!) baby as they are easier to handle, although a parent raised bird can become a sweet affectionate pet also if given time, patience and love. As for cage size it should be a minimum of 18Lx18Wx20H with the bar spacing no larger than 1/2 inch or 15mm. For more informataion I would recommend checking out the following site which has lots of information on lovebirds and I think it will be quite helpful to you. www.lovebirdcenter.com/

I wanted to say that just because you get a pair of lovebirds that does not mean they will want nothing to do with you, i have quite a few pairs who love eachother and love me just the same. As long as you spend as much time with them as you can and keep them used to people. Any bird, if left in the cage and not handled at all will get untame. My birds do not like me if they are breeding but thats the only time and that is to be expected. If you are away most of the day i say get a pair. but play with them all you can and they will remain social with you too. I wish you lived near Montana i have some wonderful wonferful little guys waiting for someone to love them. Good luck! |
