An invitation to write...
If you're a frequent visitor to this board, then you surely have a love and devotion to classic soap operas. How would you like to create and write your own? Many of you are familiar with the crop of web-based, text, soap opera episodics that have appeared on the web in varying forms over the past several years (in fact, I write one of my own). Several months ago, I started a new project that would essentially be a virtual look at soap opera history through time in what could be called a parallel universe (we can call it Earth Soap. Any of you that have read DC Comics in the past will know what I mean. ;) ) This project starts off in 1951 (in honor of the first successful TV soap, Search for Tomorrow) and will continue through time with events that parallel real world events (series exanding from 15 minutes to 30 minutes and then to an hour; series going from b/w to color, etc.) Of course, a lot of those events are still far off in the distance as this project is just starting. Anyway, the concept is that there are 3 TV networks who are just beginning to break into the soap opera genre. The actual episodes themselves are written more like the old Soap Opera Digest synopsis of events in the series rather than actual episodes that are broken down into scenes. When I originially created the idea many years ago (offline), I also created all of the series and wrote many, many, many storylines for the series. Now that the project has made it to the web, however, I've decided to open up the project to outside writers to create and write their own series. I've also decided to change the format slightly so that I might turn into a sort of role playing game. In the game, the writers are the proverbial powers that be in charge of the own series and will have to deal with things like trying to get the right time slot, the right network, sponsors, and casting the roles with fake actors. Writers will also have to deal with the constraints of a 15 minute series (the current series length) and actor contracts as well as unexpected things that might be thrown in their way (an actress turns up pregnant or an actor suddenly wants out to do a movie) and have it reflect in sudden shifts in their storylines. If anyone here would be interested in participating, the actual site for the project is here while a more detailed explaination of what's required is here. Thanks for considering this and I hope you'll decide to participate. I think this is going to be fun for everyone both in front of the screen and behind it.
