Why do JWs not celebrate birthdays and holidays?

Is there a Biblical reference for their decision?

My daughter-in-law is a JW.

Basically they believe that if we celebrate our own birthday we make our birthday equal with Christ's since we celebrate His birthday.

They abstain from traditional form of holidays, such Easter, because they believe they are pagan riturals invented after the early church went corrupted (they believe they are the only true resoration of that corruption, or course...).

That's my understanding after talking with many JW, but I don't have any referrences on the issue, offhand.

or it could be many are running scared out the back door while the newbies are coming in the front door of the kingdom halls. They have a high turnover rate among Jws.

And, thus one generation is igornant of what the last generation believed.

I have a book called Finished Mystry, which teaches that Jesus returned invisbility in 1874, today JW's believe that he returned invisbility in 1914. Once, the 1914 generation of Jehovah's witnesses dies off, they will have to find a way to get around their teaching that "this generation" will see the end of things. Either they will lengthen a generation, or change the date Jesus already returned.

And, the watchtower answer is, the light keeps getting brighter and brighter or was it like a sail boat that goes crisscross so to get the wind in its sails.

David Reed's works are great on documenting doctorial changes the watchtower has made over the years.

Yes... and the book the watchtower published "The Greastest Man That Ever Lived" on the last page and the second to the last page "though the book is long, they didnt number the pages, that one can call them on it by citing page numbers" also states "Christ came in secret in 1914 and ruling on earth" Mathew

matt 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
24:25 Behold, I have told you before.
24:26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.
24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

The watchtower, awake, Kingdom Hall and JW's are nothing more then the word of God come true IMHO :)
