Banning FAQ
all about banning people from your board. :evil

Q: I want to ban a user from my board. What are my options?
A. You can ban them by name, there are 2 ways to do that.
1. member management>view and manage all members>check the box by their name>select 'ban' from the drop down menu...when you ban from the 'all members' list you also ban the email automatically. It will not show you the email in the banned email list, (you will just see their username in your banned usernames list) however that email IS banned and any other accounts made that use that email will also be banned. When you 'unban' from the all members page you automatically UNBAN that email too (sometimes the email does not get unbanned, see notes in the second post below).
When you ban someone by this method, they cannot view the board while logged into that account or any other account registered to the same email.

2. member management>ban username>type in name> check box for global or local>ban....when you use this method, you also ban the email address automatically. (this changed recently in version 7.2, before that manual banning only banned the name, so if you banned some people a long time ago using this method, their emails are not banned.)This is the only way to ban a user who has never posted at your board, because they do not show on your all users page.
When you ban someone by this method, they cannot view the board while logged into that account or any other account registered to the same email.

3.You can also ban someone by email, if you know their email address, for example they have the email visible in their profile. Just type in the email address and click BAN.
When you ban someone by this method, they cannot view the board while logged into any account registered to the same email.

4.You can ban someone by IP # or IP range. In the banned IP list of your control center, there is a tool to look up the IP for any member of your board. (they have to be a member to use this) The list of IPs it shows you is ALL of the IP's that user has used with that name anywhere on ezboard. So, even if they only posted once at your board, you may see 20 or more IPs listed. You (as an admin) can also see the IP they used on a specific post.
7.0 update: banned IPs can now not even view the board they are banned at, logged in OR logged out..
7.2 update: when you do an IP lookup on a user now, the list of their IPs shows on the same page as your previously banned IPs, so it is more convenient to check if say an innocent user is being caught in an IP range ban. Also there are new 'ban all' and 'unban all' buttons, so you can ban or unban all the IPs of a user all at once. Much better than doing each one at a time!

Q. I banned the user by name, email, and IP, but they keep coming back.
A. If they make a new email address, a new name, and are able to use a different IP number (either through a proxy, AOL, etc), it is hard to keep a determined pest away. AOL users , for example, have such dynamic IPs that banning the whole range may also prevent lots of innocent AOL members from using your board. You may need to use MBA or private forums to get rid of the 'unbannable' pest.

Q. What does a banned person see when they try to use my board?
A. Now, after 6.9, a user banned by name or email can no longer even VIEW the board they are banned from. This only applies when they are logged in.
7.0 update: banned IPs can now not even view the board they are banned at, whether they are logged in OR logged out.
The banned user does not see the board and will not show in who's online, instead he sees a page saying 'you are banned'.

Q. One of my friends tried to join my board but it tells them they are banned. I never banned them!
A. they may share the same email or IP as a banned user. Remember that banned emails may not show in the banned email list, an email is automatically banned when you ban a name from the all users page. Try having them use a different email and see if the board still tells them they are banned.
*note: if they share an email with a banned user, the odds are they are the same person as the banned user!

Q: a user says they are banned, they get the message saying ;you are banned at this board', but there is no red B by their name in the all users list and their name is not listed on the banned email or banned user list. How can they be banned?

A: when you ban a name via the all users page it also bans all other names using that same email.

Let's say I ban the name JOE. the name Joe is linked to the name John. That same user also owns the name Jim, but that account is not linked, although it uses the same email.
all 3 names are members of my board.
When I ban Joe, both Joe and John will show with a B next to their names. Jim does not show the B, but is actually banned by email. Jim's name also does not show on the banned email list or the banned users list. But Jim cannot post or view the board while logged in.

I decide to unban JOE. (via all users page) This unbans the name JOE and the email for JOE, but John may still show on the banned users list and banned emails list. I may have to unban John separately. Even after both Joe and John are unbanned, it is possible that Jim is STILL banned. I never unbanned Jim because I didn't even know he was banned, his name showed no B and was not on the banned list.

I might have to also unban Jim via the all users page, if he is still banned but not showing as banned. Sometimes banning him and unbanning again will work to clear his name. Also if you know his email, ban that manually so it shows up on the banned email list, then check the box next to it and unban it.

Since all the names really are the same person using the same email, it's not an innocent person who is being mysteriously banned, but it could explain why some names appear to not be banned and yet are functionally banned.

Q. If I ban someone do they still receive admin emails?
A. yes, if you selected email all users, they will receive it (assuming they selected to receive admin emails in their preferences).

Q. If I ban someone and then delete them, are they still banned?
A. (edit april 22, 2003)The answer USED to be yes. But I retested this and now it is yes and no. Lets say I had banned the name Jane. Then I delete Jane from my memberlist. The name Jane is unbanned, but her email is still banned. So if Jane tries to come to my board she gets the banned message, but if she changes her email address on the Jane account, then she can come backto my board with that name. If she makes a new name Janet on the old email that used to belong to Jane, then now Janet is banned but Jane can come back and post (because she has a new email).

Here is a way to keep their name banned even after you delete them: ban them again after deleting them by the manual method, where you type in their name and click ban. They don't have to be a member to ban them this way, so you can delete them and then ban them this way and both their name and email will stay banned, without returning them to the memberlist.

Re: Banning FAQ
If you get a banned message at a board but the admin says that you are not banned there, they cannot seem to get you unbanned, have the admin read this:

Admins: If a user says they are banned but their name does not have the red B by it in all users list, and you cannot find any banned email or names or IPs that correspond to that user:

diagnostic questions

1. does the user get the banned message as soon as they try to view the board while logged in? (i.e. they cannot view the board at all while logged in) But, they CAN view the board logged out? If answer is YES, go to # 4

2. is the user never able to view the board while logged in OR logged out? If answer is yes, go to #5.

3. The user is unable to view the board logged in ir logged out, but this is only sporadic, one day they can view the board, the next day they can't. If this describes the situation, please see # 6.

4. A 'yes' answer to question 1 indicates the user is banned by name and/or email. It is possible for them to be banned this way and NOT show on the list.
Check the banned name list. If they do not show there, unban them manually by typing in their username, checking the radio button for local or global, and then clicking 'unban'.
Next check the banned email list. If their name is not shown there, type in their email, then click 'ban'. Now it shows up on the list. Check the box by that email and click 'unban'.
the user should now be able to view the board while logged in.
*note: if they have any linked accounts, you may also have to unban those names manually.

5. A 'yes' answer to question 2 indicates the user is banned by IP. 7.0 update made banned IPs unable to even view the board. Check the banned IP list, if their IP does not show there, it can still be banned but hidden. To get the hidden banned IP to show:
go to the ban by IP section as if you were going to ban an IP. Leave the IP box blank, and click 'unban'. This should cause any hidden banned IPs to show, and then you can unban them.

6. The user is probably banned by IP, but they have a dynamic IP that changes frequently. note that AOL IPs are very dynamic and one AOL user may have hundreds of IPs listed. The same IP may later be assigned to another AOL user. For this reason, I do not reccomend banning AOL Ip's, because innocent users can get caught by it, and the guilty one you wanted to ban will have a new IP very soon and escape your intended banning anyway.

If a user has their IP change when they go to a specific page, they may continue to get the banned message everytime they try to go to that page because their computer is giving them a cached version of the page. Cleaing the cache should help. Some ISPs such as AOL will also store a visited page in the ISP cache and give that same version of the page to all users of that ISP who visit the same page. If this is happening to several members of your board on the same page, all they can do is wait until the ISP clears their cache.
