Bucky Carter question
I remember watching Ryan's Hope from the time it came on until the time it went off. The first few years of it over time have become a blur in my mind. One of these blurs is the character of Bucky Carter. I only recently was able to access SoapNet after our cable system finally added it. By that time Ryan's Hope was up to 1979 and Bucky Carter was gone. Last night as I was watching the marathon of this weeks shows, Pat and Nancy have moved into Bucky's boat. Delia mentioned that it was his boat after following Pat and Nancy home. I also saw Justin Deas as Bucky just briefly on the Christmas rerun of the show that SoapNet chose to air.

Can anyone refresh my memory on the Bucky Carter character? It seems he may have been linked with Faith? Was the character written out and Justin Deas fired or did Justin Deas decide to leave and the character not recast. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Bucky Carter question
Here's what I've read about Bucky's character.

Originally ABC wanted a hospital based soap whereas Labine and Meyer had the more traditional family oriented "A Rage to Love" in mind. Therefore, it was decided to merge the two and include an emphasis on both the Ryans and the hospital where Bucky worked.

After a while it was decided to tone down the hospital aspect of the show but whereas most people who worked there had ties to the Ryans, Bucky had no real purpose.

Deciding to keep Justin Deas until the end of his three year contract, the character had few storylines for the rest of his tenure but acted mainly as a confidante for the others. At the end of his contract, Deas left the show and went on to As the World Turns.

It was basically down to the disagreement between ABC and Labine/Meyer that the Bucky character was left without a story.

Re: Bucky Carter question
Bucky was the nephew of Eleanor "Nell" Buckminster Beaulac, the wife of Seneca. Bucky was part of the "Three Musketeers of Neurology", the other two being Faith Coleridge and Patrick Ryan.

Bucky was the third wheel in most stories. Originally he was paired with Pat & Faith, but that fizzled when Faith was kidnapped by Kenneth, the crazy lab assistant that Seneca hired to help Nell.

Then Bucky was paired with drug addict Serena "Reenie" Szabo, the daughter of mobster/funeral home owner Nick Szabo. However, the relationship blew over when the director of Channel R, whose name slipped my mind, was blackmailed by Nick to leave town. In return, the man told Bucky that Reenie knew nothing about Allistair, Diana (Bucky's mother) dog, breed, which Reenie proclaimed to have vast knowledge of. He went on to say that Reenie was after his money.

Bucky went on to be Seneca's confidante and the source of money for Jack & Mary. Jack had been in a car accident and the bill was huge. Bucky was paired with Alicia Nieves, but Alicia ended up with another storyless character Bob Reid, Delia's cop brother.

After a while, Bucky floated with no story, along with Clem Moultrie, the doctor who Ed felt was like his son. Clem was sent off to Alambama and Bucky returned to Boston when his grandfather, Henry Osbourne Carter, Sr. was ill. Alicia & Angel were also shipped off at this time when Alicia refused to help Rae, who had hired her as a secretary, snag Frank from Jill.
