Clay Aiken "Measure of a Man" GUSH post Video adde
GOD I LOVE this man!! I LOVE the whole CD. I've been listening to it NON stop :)

1) Invisable - I NEVER get tited of this song, the melody and the lyrics ROCK. The way Clay sings it, it's SO sexy and I know he's not even trying to be sexy *THUD* The way he says "Wait...I already am," just KILLS me! *drool* :iluvu LOL

What are you doing tonight
I wish I could be a fly on your wall
Are you really alone
Still in your dreams
Why can't I bring you into my life
What would it take to make you see that I'm alive

[Chorus]

If I was invisible
Then I could just watch you in your room
If I was invisible
I'd make you mine tonight
If hearts were unbreakable
Then I can just tell you where I stand
I would be the smartest man
If I was invisible
(Wait..I already am)

I saw your face in the crowd
I called out your name
You don't hear a sound
I keep tracing your steps
Each move that you make
Wish I could be what goes through your mind
Wish you could touch me with the colors of your life

[Chorus]

If I was invisible
Then I could just watch you in your room
If I was invisible
I'd make you mine tonight
If hearts were unbreakable
Then I can just tell you where I stand
I would be the smartest man
If I was invisible
(Wait..I already am)

I reach out
But you don't even see me
Even when I'm screaming
Baby, you don't hear me
I am nothing without you
Just a shadow passing through...

[Repeat Chorus]

2) I will Carry You

OH MY GOD (puddle on the floor) I LOVE THIS SONG!!! Clay doesn't even know but he inspires so many people just by being who he is, he makes people feel special, happy and gifted. that's what I love about the song. It's so beautifu, so Clay :iluvu

Yeah I know it hurts, Yeah I know you're scared walking down the road that leads to who knows where. Don't you hang your
head don't you give up yet when courage starts to disappear I will be right here.

[Chorus:]

When your world breaks down and the voices tell you turn around. When your dreams give out I will carry you, carry you.
When the stars go blind and the darkness starts to flood your eyes. When you're falling behind, I will carry you.

Everyboday cries, Everybody bleeds, No one ever said that lifes an easy thing. Thats the beauty of it, when you lose your
way, close your eyes and go to sleep and wake up to another day.

[Chorus]

You should know now that you're not alone. Take my heart and we will find, you will find, your way home.

When your dreams give out I will carry you, carry you. When the stars go blind and the darkness starts to flood your eyes.
When you're falling behind, I will carry you, carry you, I will carry you, carry you, I will carry you, carry you, I will
carry you.

3) The Way - I am a HOPLESS romantic and this song makes me cry. I love this song SO much I put it on my answering machine message. Clay has this way of making you feel like he's singing only to you. I am so moved by this song, there are no words. It reminds me of my own life and also Elizabeth and Jason *sniff* I just can't get this melody out of my mind!

Theres something bout the way you look tonight,
Theres something bout the way that i can't take my eyes off you.
Theres something bout the way your lips invite,
maybe its the way that i get nervous when your around.
And I want you to be mine.
And if u need a reason why,
[Chorus:]
Its in the way that you move me,
and the way that you tease me
the way that I want you tonight,
its in the way that you
hold me, and the way that you know me,
when I can't find the right words to say,
u feel it in the way, you feel it in the
way.

Theres something bout how you stay on my mind,
Theres something bout the way that I whisper your name when I'm asleep Oh no.
Maybe its the look you get in your eyes. Oh baby its the way that makes me feel to see you smile.
And the reasons they
may change but what i'm feeling stays the same.

[Chorus]

I can't put my fingers on
just what it is that makes me love you, you baby.
So don't ask me to describe, I get all choked
up inside, just thinking bout the way.

[Chorus]

4) When you say you love me - A lighter fun song and I love the way he says, "I'm not lookin for a one night stand." LOL

I've been watching you, from a far and the way you make your way around the bar. You laugh like your really entertained and
you smile like its your favorite game. Now your moving closer to me and our eyes are connected emotionally. I'm not looking
for a one night stand, Or a place for a broken heart to mend, I know everybody hear wants to hold ya. I know what it's like
cause i feel the same. When you look in my eyes there's a part of me that's still afraid.

[Chorus:]
And when you say you love me do you mean it, baby when you hold me do you feel it? Should I believe in magic in your eyes,
I would wait until the end of time to hear you say you love me like you mean it, baby when you hold me make me feel it. All
i wanna do is make you mine I've been hurt way too many times.

They say if you wanna make god laugh, then all you gotta do is tell him your plans. I know that the timing's not right, Did
you know that i would meet you tonight. Its not that i don't really like the attention, I feel like the only man in the
room. Are you really sincere, is this just something that you do?

[Chorus]

Again and Again and again I would hurt my friend till the end, You know I've been high i've been low I got no plaace else
left to go, again and again and again when will this search ever end?

[Chorus]

5) No More Sad Song(s) - What a vocal performance!! I LOVE this man he gives me chills!!!!! :)

This is the way, That i state my independence, That i'm no longer connected to your memory. This is the day that i'm making
my defection, gotta claim back the affection that you stole from me. I used to hear your music so loud But its so low.
You're just another face in the crowd, I'm letting you know.

[Chorus:]
No more sad songs, I'm letting it go now, Switched off switched on, I'm letting you know, you turned out the light. I'm
gonna be alright without... Turn the radio off. No more sad songs.

These are the words to descibe all your offences. You said love and love past tense and then you let it go. Haven't you
heard, Your are no longer respected, you are formally regected from the one you hurt. I used to have the longing to hear
what was in your heart, But now it seems i'm over the fear of this falling apart.

[Chorus]

No more sad songs. I used to have the longing to hear what was in your heart, but now it seems i'm over the fear of this
falling apart.

No more sad songs, I'm letting it go now, Switched off switched on, I'm letting you know. No more sad songs, I'm letting it
go now, Switched off switched on, I'm letting you know. you turned out the light. I'm gonna be alright without... Turn the
radio off. No more sad songs. No more sad songs.
No more sad song, No more sad songs.

6) Run To Me - Definately another favorite on the album! Simply breathtaking and powerful and another one that makes me cry. Run to you Clay? OK!! You don't have to ask me twice! :iluvu

Don't, You don't have to save my life
No, You're not ready I can feel it
Outside it's raining, but I'll just go home
Someday your heart will let him go.

As soon as you get that feeling
You can start to live again
As soon as the worst is over
You can make it all make sense
Rigt now I can't give you what you need
As soon as you get the feeling...
Run To Me.

Hush, You don't have to say a word.
Trust, I'm not going to hate you for it.
Feels like my touch only brings back the pain
Someday those memories will fade away

As soon as you get that feeling
You can start to live again
As soon as the worst is over
You can make it all make sense
Right Now, I can't give you what you need
As soon as you that feeling...
Run To Me.

7) Shine - Clay just makes you feel so good :) I can't describe it! He could sing the phone book or a cereal box with so much emotion! *sigh*

You can try to hide away from every drop of rain that's hanging over you.
And you can say it's all a waste.
Lost your time in space.
There's nothing left to lose.
Like a broken angel on the ground, like a symphony without a sound.
Turn around.

[Chorus]
Everything you are.
Everywhere you've been.
The sinner, and the saint that fight the battle within.
Everyplace you go.
Everybody knows.
Shadows fall across the sun sometimes.
Shine.
Your gonna shine.

In the mirror of your soul.
I know that you know, you are not forsaken.
Hey butterfly open up your weary eyes, and realize it's a trip we're taking.
And the world will turn around again.
And your shattered heart is going to mend.
In the end.

[Chorus]

Everything you are.
Everywhere you've been.
The sinner, and the saint that fight the battle within.
Everyplace you go.
Everybody knows.
Shadows fall across the sun sometimes.
Shine.
Your gonna shine.

Baby lets go run to those shooting stars.
Watch the cresent moon smile to your heart.
Shine.
Your gonna shine.
Shine.
Your gonna shine.

[Chorus]
Everything you are.
Everywhere you've been.
The sinner, and the saint that fight the battle within.
Everyplace you go.
Everybody knows.
Shadows fall across the sun sometimes.
Shine.

[Chorus]
Everything you are.
Everywhere you've been.
The sinner, and the saint that fight the battle within.
Everyplace you go.
Everybody knows.
Shadows fall across the sun sometimes.
Shine.
Your gonna shine.

8) I Survived You - Can't stop singing this one either! LOVE the way he says "baby" auuuugh! Does he know the power he has over women like me? I doubt it my god! lmao

I see the picture clear now, and the fog has lifted.
The wool you tried to pull over my eyes was clever.
Yeah your gifted.
But you forgot to dot some I's, and cross some T's along the way.
I'm better now despite you baby.
I'm stronger these days.

[Chorus]
Stronger.
I survived the crash.
Survived the burn.
Survived the worst, yeah baby, but I learned.
Survived the lies.
Survived the blues.
Almost killed me, but I survived the truth.
And when you wrote me off like I was doomed.
I survived you.

I can look in the mirror now.
It's been a slow awakening.
Haunted by a heart full of you, could'nt help mistaking.
That you could ever care for anyone.
Anyone but yourself.
But you would have to have a conscious baby.
Good luck I wish you well.

[Chorus]
I survived the crash.
Survived the burn.
Survived the worst, yeah baby, but I learned.
Survived the lies.
Survived the blues.
Almost killed me, but I survived the truth.
And when you wrote me off like I was doomed.
I survived you.

This heart has been torn in two.
Cut and bruised.
With too many bitter endings.
I'll be damned if I have thoughts of you rain on my new beginning.

[Chorus]
I survived the crash.
Survived the burn.
Survived the worst, yeah baby, but I learned.
Survived the lies.
Survived the blues.
Almost killed me, but I survived the truth.
And when you wrote me off like I was doomed.

I survived the crash.
Survived the burn.
Survived the worst, yeah baby, but I learned.
Survived the lies.
Survived the blues.
Almost killed me, but I survived the truth.
And when you wrote me off like I was doomed.
I survived you.

9) This is the Night - Clay's first single ever and I own a copy :) This song will always have a special place being his first. The first time I heard it on the radio I started squealing like a teenybopper. Our Clay had arrived and this is just the begining.

When the world wasn't upside down, I could take all the time I had
But I'm not going to wait when a moment can vanish so fast

'Cuz every kiss is a kiss you can never get back

Lift me up in your eyes
If you told me that is what Heaven is, well, you'd be right
I've been waiting forever for this
This is the night

When the answer to all my dreams is as close as a touch away
Why am I here holding back what I'm trying to say?

Lift me up in your eyes
If you told me that is what Heaven is, well, you'd be right
Hold me close to your heart
I would go with you to the ends of the Earth and we'll fly
I've been waiting forever for this
This is the night

This is the night where we capture forever and our tomorrows begin
After tonight, we will never be lonely again

Lift me up in your eyes
If you told me that is what Heaven is, well, you'd be right
Hold me close to your heart
I would go with you to the ends of the Earth and we'll fly
I've been waiting forever for this
This is the night

10) Perfect Day - AWSOME song! Very Rock very amazing very cool :)

I was Fading last night,
Lost out in the cold,
Couldnt see the light,
Then she opened up the door.

I came in from the dark,
And Fell Into Her Arms,
Just in time,

And Now i know that i've,
Have left the past behind, Wont let it go.

[Chorus:]
You could tell me tonight,
That maybe the world would end,
That the sun wouldnt rise,
Or it was gonna rain again.
Just as long as shes in my arms,
Its gonna be a perfect day.

Theres a look in her eyes,
It makes me feel alright.
It lights the perfect sky,
That i couldnt see before.
That she helped me to find.
Now that ive seen her shine.
I know that ill never be alone

Because Now i know that i've,
Have left the past behind, Wont let it go.

[Chorus]
Its gonna be a perfect day.

I think i lost you in another life,
A part of me that i left behind.
I wont go up without you.

And now i know that i've,
have put the past behind,
Ill let it go.

[Chorus x2]

Its gonna be a perfect day

11) Measure of Man - So EVERYTHNG that Clay is :) I LOVE it Wiykd he walk on water? would he run through fire? would he be your ancor? Would he give his life up to be all that he can? Yes I believe Clay would :)

If one day you discover him
Broken down he's lost everything
No cars, no fancy clothes to make him who he's not
The woman at his side is all that he has got
Why do you ask him move to heaven and earth
To prove his love has worth?

Would he walk on water
Would he run through fire
Would he stand before you
When it is down to the wire
Would he gave his life up
To be all he can
Is that, is that, is that how you measure a man?

If by chance all he had to give you
Was three words wrapped around his finger
Would that be deep enough at the end of every day
And how will you ever know
If a man is what he says?

Why do you ask him to move heaven and earth
To prove his love has worth
Would he walk on water
Would he run through fire
Would he stand before you
When its down to the wire
Would he give his life up to be all he can
Is that, is that, is that how you measure a man?

He never gives up
That broken dream
His world goes around in wonder it seems
Is that how you know
Is that what it means?

Would he walk on water
Would he run through fire
Would he stand before you
Would he will be your anchor when the dark unfolds
Would he always love you the best that he knows?

Would he give his life up
To be all that he can
Is that, is that, is that how you measure a man?

Would he walk on water
Would he run through fire
Would he stand before you
When it is down to the wire
Would he gave his life up
To be all he can

Is that, is that, is that, how you measure oh...

Is that, is that, is that, how your measure a man?

12) Touch - HOLY SEXY song that is not even about actual sex!!! I LOVE this song!! Break out the fire extiguishers! WOW! HOT SONG!

Blue, is the ocean in your eyes,
Blue is cool September skies, as a lonely waterfall.
Red, is the fire in your heart,
or the passion of love that we make as the sunset is fading away.

Angel, heaven starts hear tonight in your arms,
wanna drown in your body get lost in your charm.
Now that your here, angel dont go, lets keep the move nice and slow

All I want is your touch, all I want is your heaven right here by my side, every night.
All I want is your touch, all I want is your tenderness here in my life, every morning and night.
Girl cause your touch is so right

Yes, I've been thinking about you.
I've imagined the feel of your body and how it will be when we move.

Darling, magics alive tonight in your arms
wanna drown in this moment, get lost in your charm.
Now that your here, don't move too fast lets make the moment last.

All I want is your touch, all I want is your heaven right here by my side, every night.
All I want is your touch, all I want is your tenderness here in my life, every morning and night.
Girl cause your touch is so right

I don't want nobody else and you see that my body is aching,
I'm hopelessly takin by you.

All I want is your touch, all I want is your heaven right here by my side, every night.
All I want is your touch, all I want is your tenderness here in my life, every morning and night.
All I want is your touch, all I want is your heaven right here by my side, every night.
All I want is your touch, all I want is your tenderness here in my life, every morning and night.
Girl cause your touch is so right
your touch is so right
right
your touch is so right.

Go buy the CD. If you love Clay you won't be dissapointed! If you don't love Clay, you should start! :p :lol Try to resist the urge to download the songs, if you can (I know it's hard lol) the CD is worth the money and more IMO and you'll be supporting Clay :D

Dee,
I didn't watch American Idol, but a friend who stayed with us this weekend bought the Clay Aiken cd and played it at our apt. I liked it, so I copied it from him.

Clay has a really nice voice, and the cd is light and poppy--and I mean that in the best way possible, not as an insult. All in all, a fun listen. :) I'll have to hear the cd a few more times before I can pick favorites.

Album news!!!!!

Quote:
WEEK IN PREVIEW:
GOD BLESS AMERICAN

Idol Runner-Up Clay Aiken is Second to None

October 20, 2003

Those that are last shall be first.
No, that’s not the Bible, it’s the lesson in not winning American Idol. Runner-up Clay Aiken will forget all about not winning that competition, as his RCA debut, Measure of a Man, will most certainly be the #1 album this week. It would only take selling 200k to do that, but Aiken’s disc looks to do 650k, and perhaps as many as 700k as the upper demo sometimes takes its time getting to the mall.

He's just SO adorable :)

Clay Aiken Acts, Thinks And Sings His Way Through Measure of
a Man

"It was more work, more compromising and it was a lot more
thinking than I thought it would have to be." — Clay Aiken

BEVERLY HILLS — When Simon Cowell suggested during
"American Idol" that Clay Aiken was better suited for Broadway
than pop stardom, the singer insisted theater was not his thing.
While making his debut album, Measure of a Man, however,
Aiken realized he was a natural thespian, at least in recording
studios.

"A lot of the stuff on the album I can't relate to," the 24-year-old
former Raleigh, North Carolina, student explained. "There's
some stuff about being scorned by someone and having a lot of
angst and retaliation in a break-up and that type of a thing and I
don't know anything about that. ... So when I start performing or
singing the song, I try to put myself in the songwriter's place and
it's really an acting job."

Aiken's ability to find the perfect voice for classics like "Bridge
Over Troubled Water" nearly won him "American Idol," but
recording unfamiliar material from the same caliber of
songwriters has not been as well-received. Reviews of Measure
of a Man have used words like "cookie-cutter," "colorless" and
"generic" to explain his selection of tunes. Or to be more
accurate, the record label and management's selection of tunes.

"They really picked a lot of the stuff for this album before the
show was over," Aiken said. "It was more work, more
compromising and it was a lot more thinking than I thought it
would have to be. We had to do a lot of thinking about what type
of songs we wanted to do and I had to work with Clive [Davis]
and a lot more parties involved than I'd thought there'd be. So it
was definitely a learning experience."
Still, Aiken is happy with the album and even if half the 400,000
people who bought his "This Is the Night" single in the first week
turn out for Measure of a Man, the album will be #1. And judging
by the passion his fans, the Claymates, showed on the recent
"American Idol" tour, his popularity has hardly dwindled.

Aiken said he kept his diverse range of fans in mind while
recording. "We just did what was me," he said. "We have
teenagers that are fans up to a lot older than teenagers that are
fans. And we didn't really try to specify an audience, because to
do that you are neglecting some other group."
On Measure of a Man, Aiken sings a song co-written by Enrique
Iglesias ("The Way") and worked with several veteran producers,
including Steve Morales (Christina Aguilera), Rick Nowels (Cher)
and Desmond Child (Ricky Martin), whose contributions include
the single "Invisible."

Clif Magness, who produced a lot of Avril Lavigne's Let Go, also
did several songs with Aiken.
"He's really one of the most creative producers that I've had the
experience to work with," Aiken said. "We would get a demo of a
song that sounds a certain way and a lot of the producers we
would go to would turn the track into that very song, but he had
the ability to take a track and hear it in a completely different way."

Aiken, who was going to apply for "The Amazing Race" but was
talked into "American Idol" instead, is excited to distance himself
from the show a little, even though he loved the experience.

"It prepared us for so much," he said. "It prepared us for the
press thing, it prepared us for the recording studio thing, 'cause
we recorded every single song that we sang on the show. It
prepared us for the camera, for the audience, for the stage. It
prepared us for critiques, obviously, too. It was really one of the
best schools for this type of thing that you could possibly go
through."

Distancing might be a challenge, though, given that he and
Kimberly Locke just moved in together in Los Angeles, and Aiken
still hangs out with Ruben Studdard.
"It isn't about competing," Aiken said about his relationship with
the man who beat him for the "American Idol" title. "He wants me
to do the best I can, so he'll give me a story about what he did
and I'll say, 'That was a good idea' and I'll do it too, or vice versa.
He's still working on his album, which will be out November 25
so pick that up. But pick up mine first!"

A nice article
Clay Aiken - A 'Real' Pop Star
Ok, so Clay Aiken’s new CD Measure of a Man has been on the shelves for almost a week now. I’ve read with interest many of the negative (as well as positive) reviews on Clay’s entry level addition to the “real” pop world. I’m quite amazed and amused at some of the comments I’ve read - apparently many of these reviewers and ‘critics’ live in their own little world.

I too purchased the CD and have listened to it several times, trying to be neutral and fair in my own ‘review’ to myself. I read several critical reviews before being entertained to a three day performance by my CD player. After reading the reviews I was expecting to hear a less than average collection of songs, by a guy that is not a “real” pop-star and who is attempting to break into the elite circle of performers who adorn the charts with their hip and ‘edgy’ tunes. I must admit those phrases have not come to mind in a long-time listening to many of today’s ‘hits’. I’d read comments along the lines that Clay isn’t a “real” artist. After all, not too long ago he was just a kid in college. It’s only his appearance on American Idol, mystically hypnotizing millions of people into delusion, that has brought him where he is today!

It’s almost as if he’s breaking all the rules by not spending years ‘clubbing it’, waiting to be discovered by some record exec. But no, not Clay. He entered a competition, nearly won (or did “win” in the eyes of many fans), and has now produced a CD. What? Can he do that and expect to be respected and admired by the music industry? Apparently not. But, to the people who keep the record industry in business (the consumer), he can and has done exceptionally well for his first time out. He has proved he can sing any song - his CD is full of future number ‘ones’, and the more you listen, the more you realize what an amazing talent he has.

But, they repeat over and over again, he’s not a “real” pop-star. So what is a real pop-star? Let’s see - if you had to list the job description, what would you come up with? The person has to have talent? The person must be able to hold any song well? The individual must have an appealing personality? They must be able to appeal to a specific age group, or to any age group? The prospective singer must give the fans what they want? This is open for discussion, because apparently we have not known what we have wanted for a long time. We’ve relied on record companies to produce what they consider ‘hip’ and ‘in’. Whether it be pulsating music masking the inadequacies of the singer or songs which constantly fill our ears with stories of violence or hate or sex or gangs. Plus, I don’t know about you, but I find that listening to today’s “chart” music there isn’t a lot of difference between one artist and the next.

So, where were we? Oh yes, the job description. Ok, so we have – talent, voice, personality, appeal, morals maybe, and ok, let’s go with “look”. So from reading many of the reviews, it appears our Mr Aiken doesn’t possess these, right? Wrong! Of course he does. Only a fool would miss the obvious appeal he has generated. We are tired. Tired of the same old stuff, tired of the same style of boy bands, females who rely totally on their looks or stage acts, and most of all, tired of listening to studio generated music without any vocal abilities being obvious in the singers delivery.

Barry Manilow? Pat Boone? I don’t think so. Even if he was a ‘clone’ of these artists they did very well thank you! As far as Clay’s “religious” persona. So what? Many of you probably have never heard of Cliff Richard a “pop-star” from England, who’s been in (and at the top of) the business for over 45 years. He is a Christian and his songs also are about “normal” everyday things such as love, life, etc. If you’ve never heard of him, check him out at: www.sir-cliff.com (he happens to now be “Sir” Cliff Richard for his contribution to “pop music”) This guy has been in the charts spanning every decade from the 50’s onwards, and he’s still going strong and as popular at 63 yrs old!!!

So then, what is the problem with Clay. Why are critics panning him? I guess because he is not as manufactured as the majority of today’s “artists”. He’s sticking to his principles, and at the same time wants to provide entertaining, listenable, varied music to the people. For those who don’t like him, they never will. He doesn’t represent what the industry has stagnated into over the last decade or so. He doesn’t represent the “shock” factor which drives people to buy the music or magazines simply out of curiosity. Have you ever wondered if any of the current “top” artists would ever make it into the final ten of American Idol? Or even be complimented on their ability to pull-off a “Broadway” song ‘live’ on stage!! I’m guessing very few! Clay has many industry insiders, critics, and wheel-churners confused. He’s just a nice guy, with a great personality, high morals, and the most astounding voice since the likes of Elvis, Sinatra, Elton, and many more “real” artists. I actually think of David Cassidy when I hear Clay sing. Maybe it’s just me….

So Clay, if you are labeled the next Barry Manilow, (Sir) Cliff Richard, or Pat Boone don’t worry about it. Your growing number of fans will continue to enjoy, purchase, and talk about your music for a long time to come. Simply because you are the “new” real pop-star!

From Billboard
Clay Aiken's "Measure of a Man" is the best pop album of 2003. :kiss Every song, every note is brimming with ambition and glory. Thanks to the bull's-eye A&R talents of RCA chief Clive Davis and a cast of grade-A songwriters—including Cathy Dennis, Desmond Child, Kara DioGuardi, Gary Burr, Steve Morales, Andreas Carlsson—the "American Idol" hero's debut album perfectly matches his radiantly melodramatic voice with good, old-fashioned power ballads aimed straight for the gods. Throughout, the timeless production focuses squarely on Aiken's immense talent. "Run to Me" is arguably the sweet spot, the quintessential tear-jerker, along with show-stoppers "No More Sad Songs," "I Survived You" and the title track. In another radio era, this album could be the "Thriller" of the day, spawning hit after hit. In any case, fans have plenty to celebrate. "Measure of a Man" is an utter triumph of art and commerce.—CT Billboard.

Billboard Q&A
Q: How did you begin the process of recording your debut album?

A: I went into the initial meeting about the songs that were going to be on the album [feeling] very hesitant. Clive Davis is a huge person in the industry. Stephen Ferrara, the A&R person, and the people from 19[Management] I was still getting used to. I was very quiet as I went in, and I just listened and nodded and smiled and let everybody else do the talking.
I told Clive I was scared about this meeting, because I had heard so many people tell me, "If you get 50% of what you want on your first album, you'll be doing well. If you're happy with half of it, you're lucky." So I thought, "He's going to play a bunch of stuff that I'm not happy with, that I'm not going to think is appropriate for me." And I was just really nervous about it.
He played nine to 10 songs, and all of them I thought were really good. None of them really put me out of my comfort zone. They were all things that I thought were radio-friendly, and I was really happy. So the first conversation I had in the business was a big surprise to me, because I was not really prepared for being as happy as I was.

Q: On "American Idol," you proved that you could sing live. But recording in a studio is a different process. In what ways did you have to adjust?

A: I think the biggest difference between live performance and recording is that the microphones you use when you're recording are so much more sensitive. It's really a wake-up call: "Oh my goodness, I'm not that good!" It picks up everything you do.
Ruben and I have talked a number of times about how impressed we were with people like Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Supremes and the big groups back in the '60s who went in and sang their songs one time through. Now we've got this mic and I can record my thing and then a week later, the band can come in and finish their stuff, and if I'm singing a duet, I can sing my part and then Kim Locke can come in and do her part the next day.
Back then, you had to have the band in the room. You had to have the entire group in the room, and everybody had to get it right in one take, and that's how they did their stuff. I don't think I could do that.

Q: Did you spend a lot of time rehearsing, or did you just start recording?

A: It depended on the producer. Sometimes I was ready to get going. Certain songs I knew well enough, so I thought I could just go in and sing them. I'll just go in a few times, get the feel of the levels and the song, and I'll sing it through three times, recording them all the entire time, and then about the fourth time, I'm like, "I'm ready. Let's do this." And so I'll sing it one or two more times through, and then we'll go back and fix little things.

Q: Are you surprised at the depth of devotion your fans have demonstrated?

A: The fans find things out before I do. I'm lucky to have so many enthusiastic and passionate fans out there. They're so helpful to me. Clearly I'm here today because of them literally for voting for me but really for supporting me the entire way and bringing Krispy Kreme donuts to wherever I come. I think I should be the Krispy Kreme spokesperson. I'm ready!

Q: Information on you seems to get out quickly. How much of that is because of the Internet?

A: I was at home [in Raleigh] for a day or two really quickly in Jine, and a friend of mine, Amanda, picked me up at the airport. We went by my old high school, to see some of the teachers I hadn't seen since high school, and went by my middle school also. Within and hour, not only was it on the Internet that Amanda and I were driving around I-540 in Raleigh in her black Jetta, but there were pictures of us at the school. They were posted on the Internet.
That's how fast things get around. I mean,[the fans are] everywhere, which is great, which is what everyone wants to hear- that everywhere you go, there's somebody who's excited about you. But it's very interesting how fast they can get this information on air.

Q: Is there a good side and a bad side to that kind of recognition?

A: There's definitely a bigger good side. The bad side is that sometimes I feel I have to be perfect all the time, and I'm not...That's been somewhat complicated for me, because I want to make sure that I'm being genuine and being friendly to everybody, because it's not like me to be rude or ignore somebody. If I'm eating dinner, and you come up and say hello, that's fine.
I was in Charlotte doing something the other day, and the waitress was taking our order and the hostess came up and said, "You just had to come in at lunchtime, didn't you?" [She]hit me with the menu and said, "Sign this." I was like, "Well, right now?" I think it was her way of being funny, but it caught me off-guard a little bit.

Q: How excited are you about the release of your first album?

A: It's hard to step back from all of this and look at it as an outsider looking in. I think I'd be more excited if I did, but you know, I look at things like the Rolling Stone cover, and that's a picture of me. It's got words written around it. It's hard for me to step out of that and realize that it may be bigger than that. I have a hard time stepping out of my skin and looking at the picture of me on the cover of [Billboard's sister publication] Airplay Monitor with my album artwork on it knowing that's going to be an album pretty soon. That's going to be a tangible thing. Maybe when I get it in my hand, I'll get excited about it.

Q: Five months have passed since the season finale of "American Idol." Are you finding that people are able to talk about Clay Aiken without mentioning the show in the same sentence?

A: I can never discount the fact that if it weren't for "American Idol" this wouldn't be happening. I signed up for it, I asked for it, and it gave it to me. It's not so much the "American Idol" thing that bothers me, but it's the "American Idol" runner-up thing. Please don't remind me!
I'd love to be able to establish myself on my own and not always be the contestant. I'm not known as a recording astist with an album, becaue I don't have one yet. So hopefully [this month] and as we [move into] the new year it will change.

Re: Billboard Q&A
Clay Debuts at #1 Despite the Critics
by Donna Reynolds -- 10/22/2003

The numbers are out and it's official. No matter what the critics
say, Clay's album is debuting at a solid #1 on the Billboard charts.

View Printable version of this article

Well, it's official. Clay Aiken's first full-length CD is debuting
at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 after having sold 613,000 copies in
its first week. For any other artist, this accomplishment would be
heralded as remarkable. For Aiken, however, it is being written off
by some as some kind of a fluke – a reflection of the fanaticism of
his fans.

As soon as the CD was released, critics seemed to be falling all
over each other in an effort to tear it apart. Using phrases
like "insipid lyrics," "bland," and "vanilla," the reviewers
appeared to be in a competition as to which one could write the
worst critique. To make matters even worse, not only did the critics
slam Clay, they also took shots at his fans, further insulting their
intelligence and musical aptitude.

It is fairly apparent that the critics had already decided to hate
the CD well before its release date. One such reviewer even
confessed this in his review. Forget about objectivity; let's just
judge the work based on the fact that the artist was a contestant on
a schlocky reality TV show. How could anything solid come from that?

One of the very few positive reviews came from Billboard. This
review was startling in contrast and bordered on being over the top
in terms of praise. Interestingly, Billboard held their review until
Friday, when certainly the sales numbers for this CD were beginning
to come in. I suspect that Billboard was not about to pan an album
that was going to debut at #1.

I have to confess that I had similar preconceived notions about this
CD. I enjoyed watching Clay on American Idol but always had this
feeling that twelve tracks of his music might be too much to take!
In my mind, I was hearing Broadway tunes and inwardly cringed. I
remember writing something to this effect during the competition.

As promised, however, I bought the CD the first day and listened to
it twice at a relatively low volume in my office. My co-workers,
many of whom are into heavy metal, already think that I am nuts with
all this Idol stuff so I didn't dare expose my latest purchase to
them until I was ready to "come out!" As I listened, I began to
relax, realizing that, although far from edgy, this CD was going to
be different from anything we had heard from Clay before.
Immediately, two songs stuck in my mind – "Shine" and "Touch." The
tunes are catchy and the arrangements bring to mind favorites from
my past. The second time through, I discovered "I Will Carry You"
and was so impressed that I listened to it a second time.

It wasn't until I brought the CD home, though, and was able to
listen to it at full volume that I really "heard" it for the first
time. Sure, some of the lyrics are a bit trite and several of the
arrangements are slightly extreme. However, Clay's remarkable voice
is what this is all about and to that end the CD is a success. "I
Will Carry You" is the most powerful example of this as his voice
soars. I think they missed the mark by not releasing this as his
first single.

I have been wondering how Clay has reacted to all of this. The
mother in me makes me want to say to him, "Ignore them, hold your
ground and keep doing what you're best at." His fans are in an
uproar and hopefully, that should sustain him. At the same time, I
know he can do better. His inexperience is apparent but with time he
will overcome this. Let's not forget that only a year ago, Clay
Aiken was a college student with no professional experience and
living a life of complete anonymity!

As I watched Clay's outstanding rendition of the National Anthem for
World Series opener, I remembered the first time most of us ever saw
this young man. In my mind, I could see him standing at his
audition, claiming that he was "the next American Idol." Simon's
smirk is indelible. Who would have ever suspected that this rather
comical looking character would be singing in front of a sold-out
crowd in Yankee Stadium less than a year later? Isn't that what the
whole American Idol experience is about, after all – making dreams
come true and discovering a star? As he finished the Anthem, finally
relaxing and breaking into a smile, it seemed to me that Clay was
feeling the same thing:heart

Re: Billboard Q&A
Surprising approximately nobody (except maybe Simon, if he's still
got his head buried in the sand), Clay Aiken's Measure of a Man CD
debuted at #1 on the album charts, with almost 613,000 copies sold.
That sounds like an awful lot, but how do you measure an album?

Well, let's start with a comparison to the first American Idol,
Kelly Clarkson. She also debuted at #1 and was hailed as a huge
success by the show, its producers, etc. But she "only" sold 297,000
albums in the first week – less than half of what Clay has sold.

It hardly seems fair to compare him to last year's runner-up, Justin
Guarini, whose album was definitely not considered a huge success as
far as sales, with only 54,000 sold in its first week.

Who else was Clay competing against? Well, Barbra Streisand had a
new album debuting last week as well – it came in at a respectable
#5 with 162,000 copies sold. So Clay outsold Barbra almost four-to-
one. Whoa.

What about last week's #1? Well, that was Ludacris. This week, it
sank to #2 with sales of 194,000 copies. But, you might say, that
was the second week it's been out, so of course it would sink. True,
but it's two week total was 623,000 copies – just barely over Clay's
single week.

How else can we measure this CD? Well, it is the biggest first week
for a solo artist's debut in ten years.

Of course, there are other ways to measure his album. Critics have
already had their say, with most of them saying it doesn't measure
up. And we will have to look forward to future weeks to see if the
sales were propelled solely by fans who were eagerly awaiting its
debut or if it can keep up some of the momentum. Apparently, two
million copies of the CD have been made and I'm sure they expect to sell all of
those. The CD is still at #2 on Amazon.com's sales chart, so demand
is still there.

It should be noted that Measure of a Man is not the only place on
the charts that you can find Clay right now. The American Idol
album, The Great Holiday Classics, also came out last week, and it
debuted at #72.

As of right now, Clay is definitely measuring up.:D

Re: Billboard Q&A
The Controversy That is Clay
by Teresa Harris -- 10/20/2003

Clay's album has caused a lot of controversy between the critics who
have slammed it and the fans who love it. One even called fans "out
of it," but who is really out of it here?

View Printable version of this article

I have read, and admittedly skimmed over, many of the reviews of
Clay Aiken's CD, Measure of a Man. I was struck by the uniformity of
the criticisms. I guess these guys all went to the same "How to be a
Music Critic" night class and saved their textbooks to get the right
phrases in all their articles.

One thing that stuck me was the obvious cynicism. How could anyone
who entered the music industry through American Idol be worth
anything? Oh no! This won't work – we can't mix two medias-music and
television! Oh, I forgot – that is what MTV does. It seems to me
that these critics feel a little threatened. With American Idol,
singers can form a fan base before the critic even has a chance to
tell them what an awful singer he or she is. What is this?! People
finding out what artist they like without the aid of a music critic?
Never!!

And what about this fan base? One author described them as
the "deeply out of it." Another termed them, "blue-haired ladies and
children who don't know better." Oh yes, I see the tactic here. I
first learned experienced this in kindergarten. Let's take down the
guy who doesn't agree with me. It has to be apparent to those who
have read or seen examples of Clay's fan base. It is ageless, from
children to teenagers to Gen X to us soccer moms to the grannies and
grandpas out there. How often do singers come along that appeal to
that wide of an age range?

Another criticism is that Clay is just not pushing the envelope.
Here I beg to differ. Clay is not only pushing the envelope, but he
is also pushing it directly opposite of the way everyone else in
music is pushing it. (As also discussed in the Foxes On Idol
article, Is Clay Pushing Pop Music Over the "Edge"?.) He is truly
issuing a challenge – let your singing sell your songs, not your
body, not your looks, not how dirty you are willing to talk. Let it
be the talent. Based upon sales, I would say great numbers of the
listening public are also issuing a challenge – we like the envelope
going backwards towards positive, uplifting songs and further away
from vulgarity and lewdness.

Another criticism is that there are too many clichés in the lyrics.
I only have ten words in response: "Hit Me Baby One More Time"
and "Baby Bye Bye Bye."

It is also obvious to me that some critics listened to the CD maybe
once, but couldn't have listened to it twice. Then again, I did only
skim over the critiques. But they missed the point of some of the
songs. One said "Measure of a Man" could be a contemporary Christian
song. Please!! Critics, if you are reading, please give the song
another listen. This song is asking you by what means do you judge a
man? And I ask you by what means did you measure this man, Clay
Aiken?

Here is how I judge this CD. Now I have not taken any "music critic"
classes, but I have been a music listener for nigh upon thirty years
and I know what I like in my music. Here are the four simple
questions I ask when I listen to Clay's CD.

How do I feel after I listen to his music? At peace, happy, ready to
laugh. Is this a plus? For me, in this world of stress, ranging from
9/11 to trying to getting to Boy Scouts on time, yes. Again,
critics, I urge you to take another listen. It seems you could use a
little bit of what he has to offer in this category.

Can I sing along with the music? Yes, often after the first listen.
Is this a plus? Why not? Isn't that what it is all about? Music
brings people together in this way. Clay certainly meets this
criteria.

Can I relate to the message of the songs? Again yes. Here is a
message for the critics and the music producers out there: The
majority of the listening public do not want to kill cops or rape
women, nor do we want to go around telling everyone about our sexual
experiences. Therefore, we don't want to hear people singing about
violence or their sexual experiences. We are people who love, who
have fallen out of love, who have been hurt, who have daily
struggles, some large, some small. We like music that tells
us, "Hey, I know how you feel." Clay's music does this for me.
Again, critics, give the CD another listen. Haven't you been hurt?
Don't you need help from someone near and dear to get through the
day sometimes? Don't you have someone or hope to have someone in
your life you love so much that you can't find the words to express
it? Try Clay.

Most importantly, can the person sing? Please! Upper register, lower
register, sharp, flat, loud, soft, and I am sure upside down. The
guy can sing – at least several of you critics out there noticed
that. Except for the one critic who is not among the "deeply out of
it." He is so with it that he can't hear the talent in the voice.

So here is my critique of the critics. You guys just keep on
criticizing and we'll keep on doing what will keep Clay in the music
industry for years to come – buying his CDs and singing his songs.
Go Clay

(OH YEAH! I LOVE this writer!!! :D :D :D WOOFREAKINGHOO!!!! Someone who gets it!)

Re: Clay Aiken "Measure of a Man" GUSH post!!
or those "American Idol" fanatics and die-hard Clay Aiken fans, his debut CD is a definite must-have.

In Measure of a Man, Aiken proves he is more than just an "American Idol" runner-up.

His first single "Invisible," is one of the two up-tempo songs on his debut album. "Invisible" has a catchy chorus and introduces Aiken to a more "pop" sound, despite Simon Cowell's remarks that Aiken would be more fit on Broadway. Lyrics including "If I was invisible, I'd make you mine tonight," will most likely be embraced by many "Clay-maniacs."

Although Aiken did not write any of the 12 songs on his album, he did receive help from Desmond Child, Cathy Dennis and even Enrique Iglesias, who co-wrote "The Way," which resembles an Iglesias song with sensual lyrics such as "In the way that you move me / in the way that you tease me / the way that I want you tonight."

A majority of the CD is love songs with the exception of a bonus cut of "This is the Night" and his title single.

"Measure of a Man" is a different type of love song. Instead of focusing on how to woo a woman, this song focuses on how women measure men in such terms as bravery, commitment and selfishness.

Other catchy tunes on the album include "I Will Carry You," "When You Say You Love Me," "No More Sad Songs," and "Touch," his only other up-tempo beat besides "Invisible."

"I Will Carry You" is about helping and supporting a loved one when he or she feels lost and depressed. "When your world breaks down ... when your dreams give out / I will carry you" are some lyrics that may offer comfort and confidence to Aiken fans.

"When You Say You Love Me" is a lighthearted song with a country flavor. Listeners can snap their fingers and clap to this song because of the easygoing beat.

Since the CD begins and ends with his only two up-tempo songs, die-hard Aiken fans will find it easy to listen to this CD from start to finish. Also, included with the album is a medium-sized poster of Aiken himself.

The only disappointing factor of the CD is that it doesn't include the words to sing along with the album. But true "Clay-maniacs" will surely make up their own words to sing alongside their favorite "American Idol" finalist.

From HDD.com 2nd week sales
ONE-DAY SALES: ROD’S SONGBOOK SWINGS, BUT CLAY CRUSHES

Aiken to Spend Second Week at the Top; Stewart’s Set to be Highest Debut

October 22, 2003

Looks like Clay Aiken’s Measure of a Man (RCA) will just keep growing and growing.

Ahem. Now that we have that out of our system, according to early reports from national accounts, Aiken’s debut will continue uncontested at #1 next week. Even if his sales fall off by more than 50% to around 300k, his total will still be about twice that of his closest competitor.

That said, the top debut on next week’s chart will be Rod Stewart’s As Time Goes By...The Great American Songbook: Volume II (J Records), which at this point is on track to move about 150k. But don’t forget, he’s on Oprah tomorrow, and Oprah sells records (just look what she did for Babs this week). So that number could go up.

With Aiken at the top and Stewart making a solid bow, BMG is looking at yet another big week after three straight with five in the Top 10.

Also hitting the streets yesterday was The Eagles’ two-disc Very Best Of (Warner Strategic Marketing). Early reports point to first-week sales of about 100k.

Next week has one strong front-running release to look forward to from The Strokes (RCA). Barring huge numbers from them, Aiken stands a solid chance of remaining at #1 for three weeks running.

Meanwhile, the week after next (11/4) is shaping up to be the next Super Tuesday of the season, with releases from Sarah McLachlan (Arista), Jah Rule (Murder Inc./IDJ), P.O.D. (Atlantic), Toby Keith (DreamWorks), Now 14 (Columbia) and a live Coldplay set (Capitol).

WEEK IN PREVIEW: AIKEN TO BE #1 AGAIN

Rod Stewart, Eagles Debuting Big

October 27, 2003

Put a guy on TV for a few months, release his record five months after the show finishes, then unleash a barrage of publicity when his record comes out and you’ll get a record that sticks at the top of the charts for a couple of weeks.
RCA’s Clay Aiken, in case you’ve been living under a rock or surrounded by smoke and fire as Los Angeles burns to the ground, had the #1 album last week, and he’s going to have the #1 album this week. Sales will drop by more than 50% after last week’s boffo 600k+ bow, but it will have more than enough legs to stay at the top by any Measure.

Clay’s not the only man in the RCA/J world: Rod Stewart’s Great American Songbook Vol. 2 (J Records) is trending up after his Oprah appearance and looks to do numbers in the 170-190k range. A TV appearance selling records? Who’da thunk it.

Just behind Rod will be The Eagles Very Best of (WSM). Thanks to a big direct response campaign (read: TV sales), the double-disc set looks to cross the 150k mark. Hmm, TV ads selling records? Who’da thunk it. All this television stuff has us thinking, as you’ve been telling us for years, that we’re in the wrong business.
