Difficult player Type 5: The invisible owner and staff
Difficult player Types and ways to deal with them
Part 5: The invisible owner and staff

Definition:
Admins and Moderaters who are almost constantly unavailable.

Description:
Some board owner or admins suddenly disappear out of sight without handing ownership or admins powers over to some one else, basically leaving the group hanging in the air. This happens more frequently than one would think. The help forums of board and group hosts are basically constantly filled with people who are desperately trying to regain some form of control over the board to prevent the group from dying. (It is funny, how suddenly people start realizing how much work an admin puts into administrating a group once he's gone).

There is a milder form of this, in which case all the staff except one single moderator or admin have disappeared. If that one person has full admin right and not only moderator right that is usually no problem for the group, but of course it's hell for that one person, since he/she'll get the whole workloak. And beware of a time when that one person is going on vacation or something!

How to deal with them:
Often as a member there is not much you can do. You can write emails, private messages, you can beg, you can grovel and kneel, but is the owner is just plainly unreachable you'll be out of luck. I have seen groups simply move the group and completely start out again as a last resort. Whether you start anew or by some miracle actually reach the owner and are given access to the admin area, make sure to assign several trustworthy (!!! make sure they are trustworthy. Lots of complaints in help forums are also about moderators gone bad who deleted posts and such.) admins and mods. That should be done in every case, since passwords get lost easier than you think, and a forgotten admin password can make a lot of trouble.

Please comment, and admins, please share your strategies and experiences so that we can make this guideline more detailed and helpful.

Re: Difficult player Type 5: The invisible owner and staff
Speaking from my experience as player (or mod) in boards where the owner and the admins weren't around, IMHO, they aren't annoying as long as they aren't the OOC type and more especially the God type.

Problems come when difficult players drop around the board (the troll types, or to hack the site, etc), since someone should have granted admin powers. But if this doesn't happen, well, people can play (almost) the same, having the mods "temporary" acting as admins. But I agree, it is annoying since you can't do a lot of things.

But in the end, if the problems persist for months, the best thing to do is to create another board and to move there, yep.

Oh, yes, definitely yes. And to delete the whole layout and settings and all.
