For a Good Cause (Flash Fic #60)
A/N: This was written in response to a flash fic prompt at The Canvas. The prompt was: "Do something. Either lead, follow or get out of the way." For the purposes of this flash fic, Courtney and Jason did kiss during the stalker storyline, but they never slept together or became a couple. Also, Elizabeth did walk out on Jason after she learned about Sonny's fake death.

Standing onstage with the spotlights focused directly on him, Jason silently asked himself for the hundredth time how on earth he’d let Emily talk him into participating in the charity bachelor auction she’d organized. The black tux she’d conned him into wearing was hot and uncomfortable, and he had to tamp down the urge to scratch his neck where the collar of his starched, blindingly white dress shirt cut into it. At least she’d shown him some mercy and backed off about the bow tie. Jason Morgan, Sonny Corinthos’ right hand man and enforcer, wearing a bow tie. He suppressed a shudder at the thought.

The fact remained—his little sister had him wrapped around her beautiful little pinky. Truth was, he’d participate in a dozen bachelor auctions if it aided her recovery. Her bout with cancer had scared them all, and it hadn’t taken too much effort for her to convince him to do it. It was for a good cause, she’d assured him. How could he refuse her anything? Nikolas would definitely have his hands full with her.

Emily’s brown eyes were lit with mischief as she glanced at Jason. She put her tiny hand on his back and gave him a little shove forward. He turned and gave her his most menacing glare, but it didn’t work. Instead, her smile widened and she gave him another little shove. Squaring his shoulders, he prepared to meet his doom.

Jason walked down the short length of the catwalk, conscious of the hungry stares of the women in the room. Now he knew what it felt like to be a mouse being hunted by a cat. He swallowed.

“Our last bachelor is Jason Morgan, my brother,” Emily said. “Jason is in the coffee business. When he isn’t working, Jason loves going out for long rides…on his motorcycle.” Her voice was filled with innuendo.

Jason’s eyes widened at his realized what she meant.

Emily paused as the room filled with loud, raucous cheers from the all ages crowd of women that had packed the room.

Jason turned and strolled back down the length of the catwalk toward Emily. Just a few more minutes and this nightmare would be over. No sooner had he completed the thought than he was hit in the head with a lacey, red thong. He let the thong fall to the floor before scanning the crowd in order to find the culprit. It was Courtney, he realized, as she winked, licked her lips rather lasciviously, and waved another thong at him. His eyes narrowed. He should have known.

For the first time that night, he felt true fear. Its icy fingers clawed his spine, and he shivered. He groaned at the thought of Courtney’s rather masculine hands pawing at him. God, if you’re out there, please don’t let Courtney win me. She’d kissed him once, after the stalker fiasco, and that one taste had been quite enough, thank you very much.

Radiant in a simple black dress, Emily put her arm around Jason. “Ok, ladies, let’s start the bidding. Let the games begin!” She laughed, earning herself another patented Jason glare. That only seemed to make her laugh harder.

“Ten dollars,” said an all too familiar voice. Brenda. He didn’t know whether to laugh or be insulted by her low bid. He followed her voice and saw she was seated a table near the stage, off to the right. She gave him a saucy little wave, and he smirked and shook his head. Even at that distance, he could see the twinkle in her brown eyes.

“Ten dollars, we have ten dollars. How about fifteen? Fifteen anyone?” Emily said.

“Twenty,” shouted a voice that chilled him. A spotlight searched the crowd and landed on Courtney. She smiled, her massive teeth nearly blinding him.

If he’d been a lesser man, the sight would have turned him to stone. As it was, he was starting to sweat.

Before Emily could speak again, a voice rang out, clear as a bell. “Forty,” she said. Jason didn’t need to look to see that it was Elizabeth who’d spoken, but he looked anyway. When their eyes met, his breath caught in his throat. She’d pretty much refused to speak to him since she’d walked out on him that one miserable day, so to say that he was shocked by her bid was putting it mildly.

She arched one dark, elegant eyebrow. Soft, pink lips curved upward in a small smile that made his heart beat faster. The cheers from the crowd seemed to fade away, and suddenly it seemed as if they were they only two people in the room. He forgot that he was wearing a hot, itchy tux. He forgot that she had rebuffed his every attempt to try talk to her since she’d walked out on him. All that mattered was that she was there, looking at him instead of looking through him, with eyes that sparkled like sapphires. God, how he could drown in those eyes…

Jason was rudely brought back to reality when Courtney shouted, “One hundred and ten!” He heard the collective gasp that went through the crowd. Damn.

“Great, one hundred and ten dollars for a date with Jason. Anyone else? One hundred and twenty? Come on, ladies! Brenda?” said Emily, gesturing at the crowd.

Brenda grinned and said, “No way. I was married to the man. I know he isn’t worth that much.” Her voice was completely without malice.

Jason grinned and shook his head. Trust Brenda to get in a jab.

“Ok, so one hundred and ten dollars. Going once. Going twice. Sold—”

Courtney would put him in a headlock that would take him down in 5 seconds or less. Just as Jason’s life was flashing before his eyes, the voice of an angel called out.

“Two hundred,” said Elizabeth.

The number stunned him. He prayed it would be enough.

A beat of silence. Then, “Now that’s what I like to hear. Two hundred for a date with my very handsome brother. Going once. Going Twice. Sold to Elizabeth Webber!”

The crowd applauded and cheered. Emily waved to Elizabeth and motioned to her to come onstage. “Come on up and claim your prize, Elizabeth,” she said, smiling.

Jason watched her approach the stage. She was stunning. The red dress she was wearing brought out the highlights in her rich, dark hair, which she’d straightened and left loose to fall around her shoulders like a waterfall. Her cheeks were flushed and her lips were shiny and wet. Utterly kissable.

And then she was there, standing right next to him. Her scent surrounded him, enveloping his senses. He’d missed her so much. Then she tucked her arm in his and led him backstage. His eyes met Emily’s right before he disappeared, and she winked at him. He’d have to be sure to thank her later.

He shut the door to his dressing room. They turned to face each other.

“Why’d you do it?” he asked, needing to hear her say it.

She shrugged, worried her lip the way she did when she was nervous or painting. “I don’t know.”

Though she tried to turn away from him, Jason put his hand on the warm, bare skin of shoulders turned her back to face him. “Please tell me. I…I need to know.”

Elizabeth was silent for an eternity, her eyes dark and unfathomable. Finally she sighed, raised her chin. “Because I miss you, Jason. I miss our…friendship.”

He realized then just how much he’d missed the way she said his name, like it was a secret only the two of them shared. “Friends. Is that what we are, Elizabeth?” Jason stepped forward, closing the distance that separated them.

With infinite gentleness, he framed her face with both his hands. He stroked his thumbs over her satiny skin, watched as her midnight blue eyes fluttered shut. The ache in his chest intensified when he felt her turn her face into his hands.

Then he kissed her just once, softly, hesitantly. Her lips were warm and soft against his, and he almost let himself go. Almost.

But then he pulled back and looked at her, his last question reflected in his eyes.

Her lips curved in a slow, sensual smile, and she said, “I’d like to find out.”
