Game Crashes (I Found Two Solutions) Come Check It Out
Situation: After the pre-game movie plays and the splash screen finishes whatever it is doing with the things that run across the bottom of the screen, either you end up looking at your desktop (not knowing why or what happened) or for a short moment you see the hood map and bang! it's gone, now your looking at your desktop.
Solution: Go to (My Computer\C Windows\System32\) and find the file named ac3audio.ax and rename it to ac3audio.ax.bak, restart the game. If you get in, GREAT! If it doesn't work, go back to the System32 folder and find the file named iviaudio.ax and rename it to iviaudio.ax.bak, restart the game.
I looked for a solution to this problem for a month and a half. I am running WindowsXP and renaming the ac3audio.ax file didn't work for me. I had to rename the iviaudio.ax file also. When I started the game, I closed my eyes, clenched my hands together and chanted "please work, please work, please work". When I opened my eyes, I was in the game. I hope you have the same success as I did. The chanting part of this solution is totally optional. Good Luck.

Re: Game Crashes (I Found Two Solutions) Come Check It Out
I think I'd be very careful about renaming any of the original Maxis files. Generally, if the game is crashing it's because a corrupt file has been downloaded and added to the game. Definitely check to see if that's the problem before making changes in the original game files.
See the topic Is your game crashing? for further information on finding corrupt game files.
Re: Game Crashes (I Found Two Solutions) Come Check It Out
The solutions I mentioned in my original post, came straight from Maxis themselves. Changing the file names stoped all of my crashing. Since then, I play and download, play and download. After a time without crashing, the game has started crashing again. Not like my original problem thou. Now I crash when I come to the end of my wall papers in build mode. At least I think it is the end of them. Since I crash at the same point every time, I'm not sure. Anyway, when I see the page come up I just click the left arrow button to go backwards. If I click on the right arrow to continue foreward, it crashes.
I have used File Cop and he says that everything is okay. Does anyone have any suggestions?
