(Graphics) Slicing images
Slicing large images into smaller pieces can help speed the loading of your site.

Slicing is useful when you have a large image or banner that you want to cut up and then display using a HTML table with multiple data cells. For example you may want to have an image that surrounds your board, the top image may be quite large to download as one image, so slicing that image into smaller pieces will perceivably help loading times.
Because the image loads in smaller sections, it starts to display quicker as the browser builds the page.

Here is one tutorial I found on slicing images.

Some info from Adobe using Image Ready that is included with Photoshop.

Splitz!

If you do web pages, or if you're getting ready to create a web page, you can really spruce them up if you split pictures into rectangles and then use mouse over effects. Splitz! is a freeware program that you can use to split an image into rectangles and then put them back together in an HTML format. This is a different approach than using image maps. Take a look and see how you like Splitz!.
