If your entire post is filtered and all you see is "HTML comments not allowed", this is not just all HTML but a specific HTML tag that is being filtered. A comment tag is not allowed inside posts on any board, even if HTML is allowed in that forum. Comment tags can look like this:
-->
<--
--!>
<!--
Often someone will get their post filtered even when they were not trying to post any HTML, maybe they were just trying to make an arrow. The comment tag filter can be avoided by making your arrows like this ==>

This can also happen when pasting the content of a forwarded email, if you happen to end up with a double hypen and a > together.
Another cause is when you have a problem with your ezcodes (missing end tag or improperly nested codes for example). When you make the original post, the post goes through, but when you open the edit screen, the ezcodes have turned into something that looks like this.
If you miss fixing even one of the comment tags, you will lose the post and get the html comments message.
It is a good habit to make a copy of any important posts, before you edit them, so if you do get that message, you can restore the post.

If you are editing a long, formatted and/or very important post, be sure to use the Preview feature. This way you can see in advance if there is a problem before you lose everything.
If you do see a problem, I suggest that you scroll up to the top of the page and click on the link back to the forum. This way no changes have been made, your orginal post is intact and you don't run into the preview + edit + back=blank box! (rare, but why chance it) and Unable to preview a message when logged out (happens when you get logged out while editing) issues.
