Hard-of-Hearing Students
Those who support bi-bi education understand that ASL and English are two separate languages, and you cannot use both simultaneously. When you use SimCom, you're signing some form of manually-coded English. So in a bi-bi model, SimCom is out.

But I wonder ... what about those students (especially hard-of-hearing or those who have progressive hearing loss) whose sign skills are still developing and for now understand better when there is an auditory component ("sign-supported speech" it's sometimes called)? How do we support their education equally? Just tell them to hang in there, work on their ASL skills, and use the textbook for support?

Re: Hard-of-Hearing Students
I have a student in this gray area. Dad wants her to be hearing. She does do better when sign language is incorporated. She is very ASL when she signs. It is natural for her.
She has an interpreter for Social Studies/Science and I am with her during the Language Arts block.

I have always felt that ASL is a very normal and natural thing for Deaf and HH kids. I have worked with kids as young as 3 who are natural at ASL. I don't have a concern for those kids. It is when they are pushed into the hearing world if that is not where they belong. That is my concern for my one student.
