I Never Noticed!
Recently, I admit, I have been going through a little bit of a LOTR slump, and I realized it had been awhile since I had seen the movies, and certainly I had not seen the movies with some of the knowledge (albeit still lacking in many places) that I now have.

For instance, the original ring bearers for the Elves were Gil Galad, Cirdan, and Galadriel. Well, I didn't *know* that when I first saw the movies, and I never really looked at the other two elves in the scene where they receive their rings of power, so I never noticed the white haired elf, or made the mental connection between Gil Galad the leader of the Elves in the battle scenes, and the elf with the ring.

So it came as quite a shock to take a good look and see--Gil Galad and Cirdan! They didn't give him his beard (Cirdan), but he might not have been quite old enough for that to have suddenly sprouted. But he had white hair! Now I am fascinated with the idea of a white-haired elf of immense age, but still vital! Ohhhh nice! I'm not sure they picked the right face, but I haven't actually gotten a really good look at it yet either, so maybe it is okay, maybe not.

I was just delighted to have seen Cirdan! And mortified to realize that I never noticed until this past week that, yup, that's who the other two ring-bearers were.

And I have a question:
Does it say anywhere in canon whether Elrond and Elros were identical twins, and Elladan and Elrohir are identical twins? It suddenly occurred to me that they might be fraternal twins, either of the pairs, or both, for that matter.

Re: I Never Noticed!
I must admit, you started me thinking there with that question. And what does one do in such a situation? Dig into the book.

The short version is... I do not really know. After a bit of search I only found the proof the Elladan and Elrohir were twins, just given their birth year. III 130. (Found in the Appendixes.) Unless elves have a *really* short pregnancy that means they are definitely twins. (The same, but with a different date goes for Elrond and Elros)

The only hint that I found after digging some more is this, from the LOTR:
"So much alike were they, the sons of Elrond, hat few could tell them apart: dark haired, grey-eyed and their faces elven-fair, clad alike in bright mail beneath cloaks of silver-grey."

While it is in no way proof that they are identical twins, it strongly suggests it.

If someone else knows some more quotes that could shed some light on this matter, please please share!
