I have WONDERFUL news!!
It has been posted on www.ABC.com in the Daytime Section. It says
(and I'm paraphrasing,here): "Al Holden returns for good-Oct 14" but
you can go directly to the site to see the exact statement.
In addition, Brian Frons released an official statement to confirm
it. It was posted on Soapdom.com, but you have to be a member to view

The threats against her escalated and Al ultimately died as a result of their acts of revenge and hatred.

What Soapdom finds of extreme interest is that when Nathaniel Marston appeared with the rest of the cast of One Life to Live at Disney California Adventure last summer, there were hardly any fans waiting in line at this autograph table. This led us to believe that his character was not that popular. However, the recent outcry of fans demanding that he stay on the show proved that hypothesis wrong.
The popularity of the unlikely couple of Al and Marcie also shows that fans want to see more real-life shapes and sizes of characters finding and conquering love on their favorite soaps.
The way the story will develop now sounds interesting, if not far fetched. Will Marcie and Al be able to sustain their romance if he is there only in spirit? Or, is the show holding out on us? Will Marston return to Llanview in a new body aka the feature film, Heaven Can Wait? Only it will still look like Marston? That might be fun! Time will tell. Stay tuned....

I was going through my group mail and read this and couldn't wait to come over here and gush in the excitement of this. WOW!!!
This is what I've been hoping for, to have Al Holden back and now it's gonna happen. Here's a toast to all you NM and Marcal fans out there. WE made this happen, and it's a great feeling.
NO matter how much I would have accepted Nathaniel in another role, I so badly wanted to see him playing Al because it was Al and Marcie too, it was Marcal that changed OLTL from just another show that I watched for entertainment, to release myself from the real world temporarily, into a show with characters that I related too and REALLY felt. and OLTL was no longer just another show in my eyes, and these two amazing actors in the roles of Al and Marcie. So, to have Al back is just amazing in my eyes and I cannot wait til it happens.
It has got me wondering how this is going to play out. Maybe Al's spirit will be sent back to earth in the body of someone else hence the new character we've been hearing about. Essentially he will be someone else on the outside but still the Al we know and love on the inside. Whatever happens it should be interesting.
I'm just so excited right now.

Al gets a new beginning with Marcie.
As Soaps In Depth's current cover story about ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Al and Marcie says, "His death is not the end of the story." In fact, it's just the beginning — Nathaniel Marston will be staying with the show. "The fans have spoken, and I hear them," says ABC Daytime president Brian Frons. "We have been able to turn the story around and keep Al, and the talented Nathaniel Marston, in a very emotionally compelling love story with Marcie.
"While we aren't always able to reverse these situations," Frons continues, speaking of Marston's status, "this was a case where we could."
But what is OLTL's plan, In Depth asks, seeing as Al recently died on screen? "Al's spirit is very much alive," tease co-headwriters Josh Griffith and Michael Malone, "and he soon will learn that he has a very important mission ahead of him — that heaven can wait.
"The success of this mission," adds the scribes, "will be the proof that even death is not as strong as Al's love for Marcie."

Talk about a divine reprise. Nathaniel Marston (Al), whose contract with One Life to Live was unexpectedly terminated this summer, is getting a second life in Llanview. The show has reinstated the actor to its roster, an OLTL spokesperson confirms. Marston will reprise his role as Al Buchanan, even though his character recently expired on air. "Al has died in body, [but] his spirit is very much alive," states headwriters Josh Griffith and Michael Malone. "He will soon learn that he has a very important mission ahead of him and that heaven can wait."

OMG, OMG, OMG, did anyone else almost fall out of their chair? Good thing my cat wasn't behind me. OMG, this is the most incredible, amazing news! Thank God the powers that be at OLTL listen to the fans. WE DID IT!!!!! NM is staying as AL!!!! Can you believe it?

What about Miss Independent's points?
There's part of me that wondered the same thing, but just like with the whole Sage thing.. TPTB would have to really be idiots to lead fans around by the nose only to slap them in the face.. Frons would have to WANT to ACTUALLY sabotage the show.. because I, for one, would NOT accept this.. Al STAYS as a ghost and not even to stay indefinitely??? after ABC.com posts something implying something else? That would piss too many people off. There'd be a mass walk from the show.

I have been wondering about this too. But they made such an effort to have us know that Al returns for good on Oct. 14th, first the site, then the announcer guy and today they kept having those messages pop up during the show. Why would they make the effort if all we are getting was ghost Al which they could not possibly do for the long term. As you said Char, TPTB would really have to want to sabotage the show and really the network. I just can't see this happening. Well, I guess we'll know soon enough, Oct. 14th will be here before we know it.
