I just loved this show!
I watched Santa Barbara from begining to end and I can still remember that very first episode. I was so looking forward to it because it would be the first time I would be able to watch a soap from the beginning. I remember Joe Perkins getting out of jail and taking that bus home to Santa Barbara. I remember Augusta and her two dobermans (which I don't think were ever seen again!). Remember her catching the carrier pigeon that Laken and Ted used to send notes to one another and serving it up as hors d'ouvres? I remember when Eden first hit town (I think it was during the first week, but not the first episode). Didn't she parachute out of an airplane onto the Capwell backyard? I remember when a presumed dead for years Sophia Capwell Armanti returned to town dressed as a man (Dominic!). I remember about 50 (a slight exaggeration, but you get my point) C.C. Capwells before the found the right one in Jed Allan (someone get this man back on a soap!). Remember when Gina (as played originally by Linda Gibboney) got booted out of the Capwell mansion (I think she was married to C.C. at the time) and said that she would leave just like she came in--with nothing!--and stripped off her clothes in the atrium and walked out the door naked? Santa Barbara was wild and wacky and funny and touching. They did wierd and off the wall first and waaaaaay better (IMO) than Passions ever could!
My favorite storyline was the Carnation Killer, when Peter Flint snapped and began killing women who looked like Kelly and then placing carnations next to their bodies. Kelly was something else! She fell in love with every guy that came her way. I also enjoyed the Eden's rape storyline, where she became pregnant and didn't know if Cruz or or the attacker was the father. Then when we learned her rapist was Zach, her gynecologist and he turned psycho, that was a big twist! The show had wonderful couples--Mason and Julia, Cruz and Eden, even Gina and Justin! The Dobsons and Patrick Mulchaey were brilliant on SB, and we need them back in daytime! We also need Robin Mattson and Lane Davies back on a soap pronto!
Seems as though a memory is hard to find, always on mind...And frustrated days pass without sight...The edge of night.
Re: I just loved this show!
Yes, but Jed Allen's role is only short term, if I'm not mistaken. I mean we need him back in a contract role on a series in a front burner storyline. Personally, I think that Days needs to have Don Craig come home and stir up some trouble for his ex-wife Marlena and his ex-lover Maggie.
Re: I just loved this show!
Oh, Santa Barbara was the greatest ever! I got all wrapped up in the Channing murder mystery in the beginning. Kelly & Joe were a great couple, too. All of those moments you guys listed were great! I enjoyed Cruz & Eden, well, how could you not? I couldn't stand Mason in the beginning, but I was just a kid! Then one day I realized how complicated he was and that was it; Mason became my favorite character. I loved all of the others, but Mason was the one that I felt like I went to hell and back with with. I could laugh at him until my sides hurt and the next day cry buckets.
Obviously, my favorite couples were Mason & Mary and Mason & Julia. But, I liked Cruz & Eden, Kelly & Joe, Kelly & Jeffery, Ted & Laken, CC & Sophia and in watching the old tapes I have a new appreciation for Keith & Gina. They really were quite a couple. At the time I loved to hate them, but now I actually like them!
Marcy Walker's leaving and her silly split personalities did signal the end for it. Eileen Davidson was a really bad choice for Kelly. The relationship for Cruz & Kelly was the worst. By the end I was watching the show mainly out of loyalty and with the hopes that it would once again go back to greatness!
Re: I just loved this show!
Kelly and Joe were one of my favorite early SB couples. I just loved them and they were one of the reasons I watched. I never did understand why they replaced Dane Witherspoon with Mark Arnold. I never did like Mr. Arnold in the role and it just ruined Kelly & Joe for me. However, I feel that the show was premature in killing off the Joe Perkins character. I feel that Kelly & Joe was a love story destined for greatness that was cut too short too fast.
Re: I just loved this show!
Kelly & Joe were my favorite characters in the early days, too. Their song "If ever I'm in your arms again," or something close to that, became one of my favorite songs at that time. The first time I heard it one the radio I became sooo excited!
I had a MAJOR crush on Dane Witherspoon and was terribly disappointed when he was fired. I then lost interest in Joe & Kelly. Although I remember being on the edge of my seat when Peter went after them on their honeymoon. I wish I remembered more about the Carnation Killer storyline. I can remember Peter holding Eden hostage thinking she was Kelly. Other than that I don't remember much about that storyline. I wish that Soapnet or some other station would air this show again so I could see more of the early stuff again.
SB the old days
Yeah, I watched from the first day, too. I was 7 years old. I couldn't wait! I was a big Days of our Lives fan at the time, and so was very excited about starting up this new NBC show from the first episode. I still have that on tape. I loved the show right off. No show opened with a more perfect scene than Channing getting shot. Wow, this show had the best storytelling.
Hey Matt, you got any tapes from the old days, like 1985/86? Anyone else, for trade?
