I'll See You Soon
Chapter 1
Eleven years later...
Elizabeth Webber scanned the shelves looking for the books she’d need for Artt100--Two Dimensional Art Fundamentals. It was quite a task, given the tiny tags listing each class had even tinier print. She squinted and kneeled down. There. Just as she reached for the book, Brenda let out a high-pitched squeal. The unexpected noise startled Elizabeth, and she fell on her butt.
“Oh my god, Liz. Check out his ass,” Brenda hissed in a theatrical whisper.
Elizabeth rose gingerly, dusting off her shorts. She rolled her eyes, accustomed to her friend’s great love for the opposite sex—a love that was invariably reciprocated. Brenda was gorgeous; it was as simple as that. More than one poor boy had been lead to his death by the siren song of her raven hair and sparkling eyes. Metaphorically speaking, of course.
Now that they were in college at Port Charles University, Elizabeth didn’t expect that to change. Sadly, she, on the other hand, tended not to have such good luck. With a sigh, Elizabeth said, “Where?”
Brenda clutched Elizabeth’s sleeve with one hand, and with the other pointed across the aisle. “Right there.”
Elizabeth scanned the crowded campus bookstore until her eyes came to rest on a denim covered butt that she had to admit looked mouth wateringly good. As soon as the thought registered, she snorted. Like she’d ever have a chance to get her hands on it. The boy the butt belonged to had sandy blonde hair that looked touchably soft. She sighed, then frowned when she caught herself. “Ok, you’re right. Those jeans do look pretty good on him.”
“Hello, blind woman. Not the one in the jeans, the one in the black pants,” Brenda retorted.
Shifting her gaze, Elizabeth finally noticed the dark haired boy standing next to the blonde. He stood a few inches shorter than his friend. “Yeah. Sure.” Unimpressed, Elizabeth shrugged and turned back to the books.
Brenda huffed. “There’s no accounting for taste.”
Smiling affectionately at her friend, Elizabeth added the art textbook to the stack sitting on the floor next to her. Groaning, she hefted the stack into her arms and made her away out of the aisle and toward the checkout area of the store. Navigating through the throngs of students buying their books was no easy feat. She’d just blown a stray strand of hair out of her eyes when Brenda gave her a shove that sent the books flying out of her arms and had her sprawling across the hard floor. For the second time. Gritting her teeth, Elizabeth vowed to kill her friend. Just as soon as she was standing.
She reached for the book nearest her and started to stand, only to bang head-first into something solid. “Ouch!” Wincing at the pain, she rubbed her forehead and looked up-- into the bluest eyes she’d ever seen. Looking up a little higher, she noticed his hair. Sandy blonde. It was the butt. No, the boy with the butt. No, this was no boy. This was a man. She shook her head to clear it and felt what she knew was crimson heat flood her face when he reached his right hand out to help her up. He held several of her books in his other hand.
Oh God. Oh God. Oh God. It couldn’t be. The sounds of the crowded bookstore faded into silence until Elizabeth felt like she was underwater, with the sound of her own heartbeat thundering in her ears.
She took his hand. It was big, and warm, and she released it as if she’d been burned as soon as she was standing. Sound came rushing back. Rubbing her hand against her khaki shorts, she muttered, “Sorry. Thanks,” in the direction of his chest. She wasn’t yet ready to look into those eyes again. They should come with a warning: “Beware—contents may cause spontaneous combustion. Or a heart attack. Possibly both.”
Brenda tsk-tsked and then flashed a dazzling smile at the dark-haired friend. “I’m so sorry. My friend’s a little clumsy.”
“No problem,” he replied with an answering smile that revealed twin dimples. “By the way, I’m Sonny.” Though he wasn’t her type, Elizabeth couldn’t help but notice his eyes, which were the color of rich coffee.
Brenda smiled and twirled a strand of wavy, dark hair around her finger. “I’m Brenda.” She gestured at Elizabeth. “And this is my friend Liz.”
“Elizabeth,” she automatically corrected. Despite years of pleading, Brenda insisted on calling her Liz. That didn’t mean she had to like it.
“I’m Jason,” the blonde said, confirming Elizabeth’s fears. She hadn’t seen him in eleven years, but who could forget those eyes? He’d grown up to look exactly like she might have guessed he’d look—only a thousand times better. Silently she cursed herself for choosing to wear khaki shorts and a gray t-shirt that day. If she concentrated really, really hard, would the earth open up and swallow her? She gave it a minute. Nope. No luck.
Jason reached a hand toward her, and Elizabeth stared at it silently until she realized he wanted to take the book clutched in her clammy hands. She handed it to him slowly. He was going to carry her books.
“Why don’t you pay for your books and then join us for a frappucino?” Sonny said, his eyes resting admiringly on Brenda. "It's pretty hot out today."
“That sounds great!” Brenda replied, earning herself a scowl from Elizabeth. The men turned away and headed toward one of the registers. Elizabeth glanced at Brenda, who grinned a Cheshire cat grin and mouthed the word “yes.” She linked her arm through Elizabeth’s and tugged.
Elizabeth sighed and let herself be pulled forward. Brenda was a force of nature; when she wanted something, she got it. Only, what had Brenda gotten her into this time?
Well, if nothing else, she'd have a good story to tell Emily.
