Looking for advice
O.k., I've seen enough, definetely have acquired an interest in Nitro off-road scene. Wondering what the best angle to enter from would be? Right now I am looking at 3 possible contenders as my starting RC truck. All 3 are from Traxxas, they are the T-maxx 3.3, the Revo 3.3, or the JATO 3.3, also should I start with the stock radio while I learn, or is there an advantage a newbie can get from purchasing a radio like a Futuba 3PK straight off the bat. I am interested in back yard bashing, but also can see myself wanting to get into the race scene as well. With your experience, are the vehicle's I am picking good starter choices, or is something better? Is there any other aspects I should consider? Let me know, and thanks for any and all advice.
P.S. my compliments to the folks at leisurehourraceway, it looks like an awesome place, can't wait to come down and visit.
the revo 3.3 is an awsome truck i love mine but u need to take reverse out after u get it if u plan on raceing and go to a single servo conversion with a good high torge servo
Re: Looking for advice
Of the 3 trucks you list I too would suggest the Revo.
A fairly durable basher for the yard and can race with minor upgrades, such as steering servo, tires, fluids, etc.
The radio should be upgraded with the steering servo to make sure you have endpoint adjustments to avoid premature wear on the expensive steering servo.
The Maxx would be the last choice for racing, in my book. The Jato can be raced and I see some guys have done ok in 2wd class with it. But again, it is a bit of a "misfit" in the true sense of 1/10 GT racing.
Re: Looking for advice
Thanks guys, I was leaning towards the Revo, glad to hear support for it. If I can scrape up the extra cash I will try for the Futuba 3pk as well. We'll see.... Planning on coming down there on Sunday to check things out, its a haul for me though 80 miles one way, I'm up by Great America, wish they had something closer...
Re: Looking for advice
100% go with the Revo. I have owned all 3 trucks you considered getting, and the Revo blows the others away. The T-MAXX isn't good for trying to take turns, it has too much body roll and bad handling, but it'll be fine for bashing. The jato can go fast and thats about it. You can't steer the thing at high speeds without weighing down the front. Also, the last time I went down to leisures some guy was out there with one, and he could only do donuts because of the 2wd.
Good choice
I'd go with the Revo 3.3, get a pair of decent servo's and a better radio asap. really for a newbie the 3PK is a little much. I'd go for something like The Futaba 2PL FM or the 3PM. I use the latter and it's really a great radio for the price. They just released a pro version with a few more features and it's synth so no crystal's to deal with.
Re: Good choice
With regards to radio equipment, I don't even know if I'd suggest something as high end as a Futaba 3PK or Airtronics M11...I think one of the biggest things a newbie can do to help him or her would be to invest in a Spektrum radio! And number two for me would be a Personal Transponder. It takes the "stress" factor out of the equation. There's nothing more stressful than going to the track, having to tune your truck and then you find out you have to wait because somebody is on your channel ( AM or FM ) or worse yet, you THINK you're the only guy on Blue or Red or what have you, and then your truck shoots across the track because some dork in the pits turned on his radio to adjust his throttle linkage or something like that.
Same thing goes with the personal transponder...it's $80-$90 up front that you have to pay...but it's YOUR transponder, and it's always sitting in YOUR truck, you don't have to hunt it down 3 minutes before your race starts.
I would venture to say you could pick up a Spektrum Radio AND AMBrc Personal Transponder for the price of a Futaba 3PK alone.
Beyond that...all the other mods to the truck are cake!
