Just from that tid bit, sounds like the little camera is a beast. It's exciting to see this technology evolve and become more accessible to the common person, thus allowing more and more independent films to be made. Fuck convoluted Hollywood BlockBusters, get yourself an editing suite for a couple grand, this panasonic badboy, write a script and make a motherfucking horror flick!

Yup. The 16 gig cards will bew out first quarter next year. That's 16 minutes of 1080i or 40 minutes with 720/24p.

I'm doing fine with the two 4 gig cards I have and we're shooting 1080 so I have 8 minuites total. The most I've had to wait on set is 5 minutes. It takes 2 minutes to dump a cards and a few more minutes to check and make sure it was copied on twop hard drives before we erase it. Just like shooting on film.

I just ordered my remote focus control for the camera and I'm building a Fig Rig like they talk about in the article. I love this camera and I love the DVCPROHD codec. I cringe at thought of having to use a tape ever again.

The p2 cards are pricey about 500 US for a 4 giger. People bitch about the price but whatever. Good lookiing film like shit costs money deal with it or shoot HDV like the rest of the kids.

Monterock - Throw me a link to that crane you just got. Also lemme know about the your Glidecam Smooth Shooter. I'm gonna buy that one or the one from Indicam.com. I just got a varizoom remote focus and it's a fucking life saver.

Hey Josh!

The Crane is a Glidecam Camcrane 200
www.glidecam.com/product-...ne-200.php

I havent assembled it yet, but I will try it in a few days.

The smooth shooter is also from Glidecam, Glidecam Smooth Shooter (arm and vest) + Glidecam 4000 pro.
www.glidecam.com/products.php

The Glidecam is bitchy to stabilize, but worth the effort.

Re: Panasonic HVX 200
Cool that's the crane I'm looking at getting. Lemme know what you think of it when you get it together. A thumbs up from you and I'm buying it.

I see your shooting with the M2. I can only imagine how good that footage is gonna look. Be very mindfull of your focus. I'm using the stock lens and we still have to be very mindfull about the focus. So much so that I had to get a varizoom remote focus to allow us to move the camera around.

With out the remote focus I had couldn't move the camera any closer to the subject or have the subject move closer or farther from the camera. As you know, that HD is so sharp you have very little room for error.

Just figured I'd mention it. We had already started shooting before I realized this and all the shoots were locked down at first. I just got the remote unit and now I feel free again. No more tripod shots for me, but that's my style.

Do they make some sort of remote focus for the film lenses your using?

Anyway luck with your flick, sounds like you know what your doing :)

Re: Panasonic HVX 200
Thanks for the tip Josh.

We have'nt tried the M2 yet as I'm waiting for the lenses I got at ebay to arrive. Guess the first two will be in my posession this week. That will be great. I will take a look at the Varicam website.

I assembled the crane today, but I could'nt get the bolt out of the tripod head. Guess I'll have to go to a hardware store and get one tomorrow.

It's a Manfrotto 503 head. If you got a tip on how to get it loose. Please let me know, it seems stuck. The only drawback with the crane so far is the way you assemble it. It takes time, so I recommend to put most of it together before shooting at location. It will fit nicely in a van or station wagon.

I guess there is some way to remote focus the 35mm lenses. Redrock has a rig you can attach a whip too, but I guess there are better solutions out there. I have not checked.

Unfortunately we can't afford the P2 cards right know althoug they have dropped the price some. How do you empty the cards? Did you have to get some expensive harddisc or can you just dump it on a MacBook directly from the camera etc.? I havent really got into that since I can't afford the cards at this time.

Let me know how youre doing with the Fig Rig. I though of buying one but the price killed me.

We are planning to have a few teasers out before christmas. I'll let you know when we do so you can see the results with the M2. It will take som failing to get it right. I will post some test footage with the crane soon also.

Good luck with your movies. I remember seeing the trailer/clips for Loyalty the Movie sometime ago. It looks great. Also The Gainsville Ripper which I just added in MySpace.

Re: Panasonic HVX 200
Why aren't you using P2? Not shooting P2 only leaves you with SD DV. I only have two 4 gig cards and they wotk fine and don't slow me down at all. I shoot 1080 24pa and get 4 minutes of footage on one card. It only takes two minutes to offload the card. If you have an assistant to help you only two four gig cards works fine. At the most we have a five minute break when both cards are full.
I carry my computer on site and hook it up the HD monitor. Use it to check focus and use it for the computer. I was gonna use a notebook but the tower really doesn't get in the way. I can also check shots from earlier in the shoot. For continuity and lighting or what ever.
If you shoot 720 24pn then you can get 10 minutes out of a single 4 gig card.

What format are you going to shoot?480/720/1080?

The fig rig worked great actually. I made mine out of 1 inch PVC and it looked funny but it let me get great VERSUS type shit running around in the woods.

I mounted the remote focus on the handle and was able to focus on the fly by guessing distence between me and the actor. You can really get some amazing stuff with the FIG RIG. The thing is it frees you up to do any angle and keep it still.

Think of the '16mm cam on a 2 by 4' they used in EVIL DEAD for the dead POV roaming shots. The fig rig works using the same principle. You can get shot that start on the ground then go over the actors head and cool stuff not even possible with a steadycam.

The HVX is pretty heavy already not sure that you can balance a Fig Rig with an M2 and a lens sticking. It'd be front heavy.

But check it out. I went in to it thinking it was a neat toy and it never left the camera all day yesterday. Even for the still shots.

Firestore
You can also hook a Firestore up to your Sony HDV camera. Also no need for tapes then.

Re: Firestore
You can dump the HVX footage on any hard drive USB or Firewire no computer needed. You can also record to a Firestorm with the HVX.

The are/and have been many options for recording mini-DV(or HDV) tapes 'tapeless' because of DV and HDV's low 25mb/s codec. The HVX records using a professional DVCPROHD that records up tp 80mb/s (Hollywood uses it for Varicam movies and now HVX).

Re: Firestore
If you use a Firestore, do you have to have a P2 card for shots in variable frames, slow motion etc?

I read something about you could shoot timelapses, but not variable frames. That is more important to me than time-lapse shots.

Anyone know?

There a new version of the Firestore coming out real soon that's supposed to be able to do variable frame rates.

I shoot with two 4 gig cards and almost never have to wait cause I'm dumping cards.

Not saying I'd turn down a firestore if offered though.....
