My wife and I just bought a hand fed, just weaned Love Bird today. He, or She is fantastic, talk about a pocket magnet, this bird love attention. We brought the guy home and I placed him in his new cage, worried it might take sometime for him to adjust, wrong, the guy started jumping around, took a bath and was playing in his plastic rings all withing just a few minutes. He doesn't bite and in fact runs out the door of his cage to get to me. I have an African Grey and an Umbrella Cockatoo that we hand raised, so we are no strangers to birds, my concern here is that I have seen him eat very little if any today. Would this be normal for the new love bird as described above ? The Owner of the pet store is very good and told me he was eating good. If I don't see him eat, when, or how fast should I look at getting some formula to hand feed him, as a side note, he doesn't act like he wants to hand feed.....any ideas.... Thanks Pete |

I would give him a good 24 hours to settle in before starting to worry. Since you have handfed before, you will know what to look for if it is formula he is wanting. Another think to double check is are you offering the same type/style of food he is used to? If you are giving him something completely different, he may not recognize it as food.
At this point, I would keep an eye on him. If he hasn't eaten well by tomorrow afternoon you may want to consult the pet store for ideas (see if they did anything specific that could trigger him to eat), and if they are not helpful, your vet. Do you have any pictures of the new chick?

This morning he would not eat either, then I got to think about a possible trigger. The owner of the pet shop took them out of the cage to feed them. I sat his feed dish on top of his cage and he started eating right away, big relief ! |
