Re: How to improve R.S.D.
March 10, 2006
Here are the listings of issues shared by the meeting on March 9, 2006 at the Rochester Deaf Club:
Safety:
-not enough disciplinary actions against staff
-not having enough understanding the process of grievance for parents
-false information given to parents
-quick relay of information to parents concerning staff/student fraternization policy/handbook
-lack of discipline communication between parent/student/teacher
-students should have the right to express their feelings/concerns to staff in a safe place
Education:
-curriculum needs to be modified to be ‘deaf friendly’
-parents should know their rights for I.E.P. development
-encourage RSD to be more ‘ASL friendly’- ASL bridge to Education and English
-should study other institutes’ strengths and apply them at RSD -retention of students to stay
-feels RSD should start Bi-Bi program
-expand and hire deaf teachers who have ASL abilities
-research scientific facts that deaf educators do improve quality of education
-add/hire ASL specialists
-need a full time social worker, not one who wears too many ‘hats’
-literacy be related/used in ASL
-fight with State to be flexible about certification requirements for deaf teachers
-ASL is our native language
-need to know our rights for RSD policies AND state policies (do research)
-look into eliminating the DB loss (currently 80 at RSD) requirement and that will possibly pull in more students into RSD
-do more legislative work to support bills for deaf people’s quality of education to teach at institutes
-have RSD teach the Legislation about ASL/deaf people, etc
-have deaf school administrators go to Albany and improve for better requirements for interpreters
Communication:
-parents should have the rights to communicate with the Board
-RSD should welcome more kids that have multiple disabilities
-would like to see RSD Board members to be visible around the campus
-develop better communication methods between staff and students
-Shared Reading program will be up and running soon for parents with young children to develop ASL skills
-need to expand ASL classes to parents at reduced costs or no cost including other family members
Administration:
-would like to see more deaf people on RSD Board
-what are the roles of the board members?
-Alumni room should be provided for RSDAA Board members, not just storage room
-more socialization between Board, Alumni, and staff
-Alumni website not linked to RSD website
-building future newsletter should include all reports from Board, PSA, etc.
-“CEO”- what does that have to do with school?
-request that Dr. Mowl do more action and prove to RSD and deaf communities to address the needs of what we want
-improve and increase Public Relations of RSD
-favors of staff over students in discipline situations
-morals needs to improve
-students’ leadership needs to be encouraged
-needs mediation services
-deaf schools and deaf community need to mingle/socialize more to develop social skills/leaderships
-needs RSD to develop a more balanced curriculum for cochlear implants students and deaf students
-subs need to be qualified to teach in specific areas
-student moral is very low
Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
