Off the deep end...
Well it is official, I have gone off the deep end. (c'mon! this is the part where you guys are supposed to fein shock! ) But seriously, as some of you may know, I run. Did the marathon in November and currently training for the half marathon this August. So just to kick it up a notch, last night I registered for my first ever triathlon-and it is in 8 weeks! Now granted it is only a sprint triathlon (mini), but I swim like a brick and am quite giddy with nervous anticipation already. So needless to say I's appreciate any encouragment I can get, and I'll blatantly be fishing for words of support as I begin my swim training later this week. Wish me luck!
Re: Off the deep end...
HA! I ordered my tri-suit today, and no way I'd post a pic, lol! Imagine a full body suit comprised of bike shorts with a built-in pad (ie: matress) attached to a tank top that compressed so much I'll win the Miss Androgeny award, mmmm appealing visual! Top that lovely piece off with a swim cap and goggles, and I'll truly be stylin'! NOT
I'd have been 9 in 1964 and I can't say if I saw the movie then but it shows up on the usual rerun channels and I've seen it many a times there.
The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964)
Quote:Knotts plays Henry Limpet, a mild mannered bookkeeper for a shipping line who has Walter Mitty style fantasies about going off to sea and becoming a hero, though he's 4 F because of poor eyesight. Ridiculed at the office and married to a woman (Carole Cook) who seems to get along better with third wheel pal George Stickel (Jack Weston), Limpet takes refuge in his fish.
He wishes, over his aquarium (and a '40s Disney style song), that he could be one. The next day, when the threesome goes to Coney Island and he falls into the water—and presumably drown—Mr. Limpet is actually transformed into a fish.
Now, the animated part of the film kicks in as he dodges a shark, falls in love with a Ladyfish, and enlists the aid of a hermit crab he dubs Crusty (SpongeBob fans, pay attention!). The undersea Henry, who still wears his glasses, has both great intellect and a distinctive thrum—the equivalent of a lion's roar that wards off predators. That thrum comes in handy, because Henry realizes that he can help the U.S. Navy locate and destroy Nazi submarines. Seaman Stickel is called upon to work with this top secret (who'd believe it?) weapon, and the plot acts out Limpet's heroic wartime fantasies.
While the underwater animation is nowhere near the level of Finding Nemo, it's still decent, considering the year it came out. And the blend of animation and live action is nearly as good as in Mary Poppins.
If Limpet feels more dated, credit (or blame) director Arthur Lubin, the veteran who also directed the Abbot & Costello and Francis the Talking Mule films.

Mal, you are amazing! Keep up the good work so i can keep telling folks i know an athlete. they think i actually do stuff other than sit on me arse when i tell them i know you. hehe.
When i swam/surfed all day, i found it best when i took my mind somewhere else. the swimming, breathing endurance always went on auto pilot for me as i stroked thinking of a girl, or a fond memory...etc.......... hope it helps.
Re: Off the deep end...
working on images of tight body-surfin suits. On a scooter. Ok, almost done......
Out here in CA, those can be 5-8mil thick because of the water temp. I still remember my swim training as we paddled in an outdoor pool in mid-December.
So Mal, ifn you can get into the suit and go out in public, you are halfway there. Swimming is a snap after that.
Re: Off the deep end...
Well I did it- HOORAY! I was SO nervous before the swim, I almost had a panic attack! But all that adenaline served it's purpose, I made it through the swim in 17 grueling minutes, and was actually able to run out of the water and all the way to my bike for the 2nd leg. I was so psyched with how good I felt, I even ran a personal best for the running portion (5k) and finished feeling happily exhausted but fantastic! Today I'm not sore or anything, just tired, tired, tired! I swear that "race day magic" they talk about is real, I felt like I had wings on my feet- did someone toss me a SoE?? If so, THANKS! Now back to my nice, easy marathon training, ahhhhh....
