Pastababe's
With an ever-growing collection of quality skins and lovely heads (think virtual runway models with attitude), Pastababe’s is a site that certainly ranks among the best and brightest of the sim community we all know and love. Characterized by hot, to-die-for fashions guaranteed to make you envious of your fine sim girl dressers and heads that are a mix of modern and classic beauties, Pastababe leaves no corner of the sim gal’s clothing and beauty universe untouched.
Recently I got the chance to chat it up with our resident glamour skinner and webmistress. Not only is she super sweet and fun to talk to, but she’s also quite dedicated to her “job” as a skinner. Take a look for yourself below…
Kathryn: How did you first get involved with The Sims?
Pastababe: I first stumbled upon the game The Sims when out
shopping in a mall with my boyfriend in Singapore. I
read the information on the back of the game and was
really very curious to find out how it works.
Moreover, when I was younger, I had played Sim Ant
before and I had enjoyed the game tremendously. Seeing
that The Sims is from the same maker as Sim Ant, I
decided to buy it and give it a try. Boy, I enjoyed
playing it a lot! And one day, I just keyed in “The
Sims” into Yahoo! I was so speechless to discover that
there were a lot of sites that were devoted to this
computer game! And it was then that I realized that I
could download all sorts of amazing stuff for my Sims!
Kathryn: What turned you on to skinning? What made you want
to create your own website?
P: After I discovered the myriad of fan sites, I began
downloading a lot of skins. However, there were always
some bits and parts of a certain skin that I didn’t
like. For example, I may not like the shoes of a
certain skin that a person had designed. Therefore,
I’d try to alter and mend it to my own liking. Without
knowing, I began experimenting and
designing a lot of skins. I had submitted a few of my
first skins to TSR and response was really great.
Therefore, I continued to skin even more and then, in
August, I decided to set up my own website.
Kathryn: How much time do you spend skinning a week? Does it
conflict with your “real life”?
P: I usually spend most of my day in front of the PC
skinning. It can range from 3 hours to 8 hours per
day. I have no fixed time actually to do skinning.
When I have the inspiration to skin, I’d just do it.
At the moment, I am currently studying part-time. So
skinning doesn’t really conflict with my real life.
Kathryn: What sort of tools do you use for skinning? For
creating and updating your site?
P: I use Adobe Photoshop 4.0, Ulead Express, my trusty
Canon scanner for skinning. For creating/updating my
website, I used plain MS Word/Notepad and plain old
HTML. I picked up HTML on my own and I think it’s
really useful cause you can actually really define and
design the look of your website.
Kathryn: Why just skins? Do you have any plans to do objects
or walls in the near future? If not, why?
P: Why skins? Maybe it’s cause I wanted to be a fashion
designer when I was younger but I am totally idiotic
when it comes to sewing...so I guess skinning is the
next best thing! :- ) Moreover, I loved playing with
Barbie dolls and paper dolls when I was younger, so I
guess skinning is like an adult extension of paper
dolls... I don’t think that I’d be doing objects or walls
because even now, I still have no interest in them. It
could be because objects are more technical to do and
I am not exactly a technical person. Moreover, I love fashion and clothes
and I buy lots of fashion magazines, so I guess I am happy skinning...
Kathryn: Do you have any staff? If not, any plans to hire?
P: Nah, pastababe’s is solely a one-woman show – I do
everything from skinning to creating the website to
updating the mailing list... At the moment, I’ve no plans of hiring anyone...
but in the future who knows? Cause I really could use a head
designer and a Simpose-ium photographer...we’ll see...
Kathryn: On your site you offer a bit of everything for the
girls: dresses, skirts, pants, bikinis…but nothing for
the boys. Any future plans to features some clothes
for boys?
P: A number of people have left some comments in my guest
book saying that I should design stuff for the
guys...but I don’t think I’d be doing that in the near
future. Women’s skins are more fun to design for
'cause there are so many styles that you can go for.
But men's designs are rather static when it comes to
fashion – I mean you can’t exactly make them wear ball
gowns or skirts with sexy silts. So I guess, I’m
sorry, but I’m sticking to doing women’s skins because
they allow me to do more creative things.
Kathryn: Anything else?
P: I’d like to thank the Boutika staff – especially
Kathryn (for arranging this interview), Sabinka & Lisa
because they’re all really nice people who always help
me whenever I ask for help in the Boutika forum. Many
thanks to all those people who have helped promoted
pastababe’s in one way or another - whether it’s by
adding my button or by plugging my site. ;-) And
lastly, thanks so much to everyone who takes the time
to send me emails....
