Question...
Okay, I didn't really know where to put this topic, but since the CBS General Discussion forum is at the top, I figured I should just put it here.

I recently started up my soap history research again (I go in spurts), and I was wondering if any of you knew of some excellent resources that could help me out. Books, television, Web sites, it doesn't matter. I'm just looking for some stuff to help me out in my studies.

All help is greatly appreciated :)

Re: Question...
Philip, I don't know how you might go about this (possibly through your parents) but there are several wonderful books on the subject. However, most of them are currently out of print. There are two "Soap Opera Encyclopedias"; one written by Christopher Schimmering (sp?) and published in the mid/late 80s and another one written by Gerard J. Waggett and published in 1997. You might find the later at a used bookstore or on a clearance rack. I bought mine new. I do know that has been available through ebay. Also long out of print is "The Wonderful World of TV Soap Opera" written by Robert LaGuardia and published in 1974 (1st edition) and 1976 (2nd edition, I believe these dates are correct). I referenced it in another thread. It is an excellent compilation that covers the behind the scenes stories of Search for Tomorrow, As the World Turns, and Another World and also contains wonderful annecdotes by classic soap stars including on screen mishappens and accidents. There is a nice section devoted to Eileen Fulton as well as Mary Stuart. In addition, there is a generous section devoted to the complete storylines (from the beginning) up until the time of publication including SFT, ATWT, Guiding Light, Love of Life, Edge of Night, Another World, and the already cancelled Secret Storm and Somerset. It's a very informative and involving read. However, be aware that there are a few editorial mistakes include. The one that stands out in my mind is an instance where the author refers to an actress in one section repeatedly as "him" and "his" and "he". I originally read this book in college (it was in the univeristy's library) and purchased my own copy a few months ago through ebay. Other copies do pop up from time to time. This is a start for you and I can also recommend two wonder sites dedicated to now cancelled soaps: The Another World Home Page (dedicated to any and everything about the series. it's very thorough) and The Edge of Night Home Page (ditto). Good luck and I hope this helps!

Re: Question...
Robert LaGuardia published another book in 1983 called SOAP WORLD which covers a lot of the same ground of his earlier book but does update the storyline information.

There's also THE SERIALS: Suspense and Drama by Installment by Raymond W. Stedman which has a lot of information on radio soaps. It also covers movie serials, comic books, and TV soaps.

Re: Question...
ahhh, yes! The Serials is, in fact, the book that I used as a primary reference for the air dates of all of the radio soaps for my Soap History Page (part of the FNaF site).
