Sharon Case interview!
From TVGuide.com, Sharon Case:
Sharon Newman, The Young and the Restless
If only The Young and the Restless's Sharon Newman were as lucky as her portrayer, Sharon Case. Since joining the cast in 1994, Case has been nominated for five Daytime Emmy Awards — two in the Younger Actress category and three in the Supporting Actress category, in which she took home the gold in 1999. Case is back on the boards in 2004, the perfect way to celebrate her 10-year anniversary in Genoa City. With a front-burner storyline exploring Sharon's not-so-stable side, Case doesn't have a lot of time to spare. But she took a few moments from her busy schedule to talk to TV Guide Online about her nominations, her previous win and why she thinks Sharon is capable of murder. — Delaina Dixon
How did you learn of your nomination?
It was early in the morning, and my publicist left me a message.
This is your fifth nomination. Does it still tickle you pink to be a contender?
It does. It's lot of fun. I've been nominated twice for Younger Actress, and this is my third nomination for Supporting. I won in 1999.
What did you submit for your pre-screen reel?
I submitted scenes with Nick and Sharon. It was the first time they'd been together since Sharon abandoned the kids and just blew out of town. When she came back, she had a lot of really great scenes [in which she had] some explaining to do.
What went through your mind when you won the Emmy in 1999?
I don't think anything went through my mind. I was so surprised that they said my name. It's weird to hear them say it on stage, especially after I had been [nominated] three times before that and never heard it.
Had you written a speech?
I hadn't planned one then, and I don't think I'll plan one this year. I'll be thinking about whom I want to say thank you to, but I won't write anything out.
Where do you keep your Emmy?
I have a bookshelf in the den of my house and I keep it up there. It has my other trophies I've won for soaps up there, too.
This year, The Young and the Restless racked up eight acting nominations. Are you and your castmates running around the set like giddy cheerleaders?
I haven't heard anyone cheerleading about it, but we're all pleased to have a lot of nominations. The only time you hear anyone squawk about it is when we don't get any, but when we do, it's definitely a good atmosphere.
Your former castmate Heather Tom (ex-Victoria) has also been nominated in the Supporting Actress category. Have you had a chance to talk with her?
We spoke the morning of the nominations for about an hour. I'm planning to see her in her new Broadway show, Prymate, while I'm in New York City for the Emmys.
You've played Sharon since 1994. How has she changed over the past 10 years?
Sharon's grown up. She's not a little kid anymore. She's a little more opinionated and has become a stronger person over the years as well.
What's been your most memorable scene over the decade?
I liked last year's story about abandoning the kids. And I'm enjoying the Cameron storyline that I'm doing right now. I loved all the fighting scenes with Nikki. They were fun and silly and it was just a great time playing those out. Every year I have a new favorite storyline. It's whatever the one is that year. [Chuckles]
Did you ever think Sharon would be capable of murder, even if it was in self-defense?
I think she's a pretty feisty girl. I like watching, as she gets older, the emotions and issues that she's buried all her life start to come out, her neuroses. She's nervous and overthinks things, so she's definitely got it in her to get herself into a lot of trouble.
Sharon has dealt with a lot of indiscretions during the last 10 years, but her relationship with her husband, Nick, has survived. What's their secret?
They're really in love with one another and are very devoted people. They really depend on one another and have a great relationship. Each of them has found the right one.
Have you ever wanted to shake things up for the couple?
No, I haven't. I like playing the troubles that come along in being in the same relationship for years and years.
You won a Soap Opera Award in 1998 for Hottest Female. Would a second Emmy trump that title?
That was a really fun award. My friends and I had a great party afterwards, so I look back on that night fondly. It would be great to win another Emmy, really fantastic, but I don't know if it's quite the same as being Hottest Female. [Chuckles] It's up there.
I will always love Nick & Sharon together! |
