Shivering towards the spiral
After listening to (and loving) Lateralus since its release, I am still amazed at an unusual phenomenon which occurs almost every time I listen to the song Lateralus. As the song starts to move towards the climax (from about, "I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm..."), I find that I feel like a coldness on my skin and as the crescendo of the music and vocals grow to the peak, literally all the hairs on my arms, face, neck stand on end and my whole body covers in goose bumps. It happens every time I listen to the song properly and listen carefully to the lyrics (which I know inside out). It was particularly mysterious the first time I realized that Maynard's lyrics actually state, "I feel it move across my skin". It really perplexes and amazes me that this music does this to my body. Perhaps it may just be the lyrics which do this me. (I am extremely moved by this album's lyrics, especially this song.) Has anyone else ever experienced this kind of feeling during this song in particular? Or anything else similar with Tool's music?

shivers
(Good name archetype5, bit of a Jungian are you?) Anyway, I always get goose-bumps or shivers when I hear "I must pursuade you another waaaaayyyy" in Pushit. Maynards voice cuts deep to the bone in that part. But with Lateralus (album), I do at the last verse of reflection, I think it's the words and the meaning in them that gets me.

imho
parabol and parabola get me the most...

simply choosing to be here...right now, hold on stay inside of this holy reality...in this holy experience, choosing to be here in, this body, this body holdin me, be my reminder here that i am not alone in, this body, this body holdin me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion.

that and the patient...

a groan of tedium escapes me, startling, fearful...is this a test, it has to be, otherwise i cant go on....
draining patience, drain vitality, this paranoid, paralyzed, vampire acts a little old....
but im still right here givin blood keepin faith and im still right here...but im still right here givin blood keepin faith and im still...right here......

i too have experienced the "crawlies" while listening to this album, particularly with headphones on and when im giving it most of my attention. im tellin you man, its all in the rythms...and the subliminal stuff has a factor in it too...but youll hafta listen on your own time to hear all of that...

With the influeneces these guys have... and the ability to tap into Enochian and Qabalistic ritual practices and vibrational techniques... Oh yeah... you can feel it... that's for sure... does it really surprise you?

Re: Shivering towards the spiral
what gets me the most is the intro to H. I get ths shivers, my muscles tense, eyes roll back and I feel like I'm growing bigger. It's been a while that I got anyting else. I havent listened with enough of my attention of late. I supose I should stop doind that. that's what the radio is for.

Shivers
Barring the ignorant comment just posted, I would like to share personal experience. I too have felt these "shivers" during the song Lateralus. I find they are a small and subdued reminder of another "shiver" experience I have had. I can only descibe it as what others have called revelation (literally, a revealing), or the "mystic" experience. At the time of my large "shiver", I had a mental experience of fourth-dimensional awareness (I literally had a four-dimensional "picture" pop into my head), an acute knowing that I had just been shown a glimpse of Truth (note the capital "T"), and an incredible rush that literally tingled all the way through my body. I was unable to cease moving during the time this was happening, and I was also unable to cease speaking; though I found myself speaking of things of which I had no knowledge and had never studied, and I was able to fully and adequately explain to others the underlying spiritual reasons for many of the problems that plague humankind. It felt as though I (my personality) had stepped out of the way and something higher was speaking THROUGH me. This state lasted long into the night. I have since had two similar experiences, though not as profound as the first. I have however, found that Lateralus induces a state of sensation and mindset that is quite similar to that night. Truth can be found anywhere if one has eyes to see and ears to hear. I believe Maynard can see and hear.

and shakes
My cat compares his experiences with the Lateralus album to his experiences with mushrooms.
"If a hiccough is an eighth of a vomit, and a sneeze is an eighth of an orgasm," he elucidates, "then these shivers I get are an eighth of an epileptic seizure."
He seems to believe that there's more to epilepsy than just involuntary spasms of the body. Personally, I'm not too sure about that.
