Skin Care
All right, all right... Here's a question for all the skin-care divas out there. ;) What is the best way to get rid of pimples and blackheads without causing the skin to become over dry?

Re: Skin Care
Ooo, I need this too. Since school started and my sleep schedule has been cut down to 6 hours or less a night, I've been breaking out. :(

Re: Skin Care
You need to put together a skin care program. You need to use an oil free cleanser, oil free/non-alcohol based toner and an oil free based mousturizer. You need to do this twice a day, morningand evening. You need exfoliate your skin more often than most. This should keep your skin in great condition so that you don't get blackheads and pimples. Once you have them, the best way to get rid of them is a deep cleaning facial. I hope this helps.

Re: Skin Care
Also remember that a lot of stuff that gets marketed towards teens will be over-drying. Pimples and blackheads aren't a result of "dirty" skin, they are a result of pores that are clogged with dead skin and sebum (the waxy oily substance your skins produces). If you wash your skin too much or with too strong of a cleanser, you will dry it and actually make the problem worse. So, to build on what Binky said:

1. Exfoliate to keep dead skin cleared away
2. User toner to clear oil
3. Use a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide medication every night to treat existing acne (cuz it starts forming way before you see pimples)
4. Use an oil-free moisturizer

And I know it's a big pain and sometimes impossible, you really have to try to get 8 hours of sleep and drink 8 glasses of water a day.

This is a really good explanation of how acne develops. It helps to understand how to treat it:

The Sephora Beauty Advisor also has some words on the topic:

Re: Skin Care
I use the Proactive. Found all over tv. It is a really great product, and makes my skin baby soft. I have very oily skin and I noticed a big difference within a few days. It costs about $40, but it lasts for a while.
The bad side to it is what Wexworth said, it is a pain! Three steps: exfoliate, cleanse, and then a moisturizer. Plus if you don't keep up with it, it won't work!

Hope this helps!

Re: Skin Care
I actually use Proactiv too. It's cheaper than a lot of brands, and it does work. It just makes you feel like a dork because you ordered something from an infomercial ;) .

It IS hard to get into the routine of a skin regime, but you really have to do that with anything. Unfortunately, it becomes inevitable as you get older, so you might as well get used to it now.

Wex, that is the god's honest truth... in fact, everything is like that. I really hate that I could run out into the snow in my undies when I was a child and not have any problem with it. Now, I have to put on ten layers of clothes to step outside in September. What does that mean? It means my body is falling apart as it ages me thinks:( :rollin

:lol Sabinka, that is how I am in Florida in the summer!
Wex, luckily I didn't order it from the infomercial... Fingerhut has it in their catolgue, in the informercial section! You're right about the routine! I started to slack off again, and what do you know, here comes the oily skin and acne!

Re: Skin Care
I am TOO lazy to cleanse and tone and moisturise every day.

Usually, I'd just cleanse my face with Cetaphil in the morning.
And at night, I'd use Loreal's AHA Cleanser.

I really hate hate having to tone and cleanse but I guess I have to start doing coz I am already 24. If I don't maintain my skin, it'd start to deteriorate.

For blackheads, I use this strip thingie called Biore Pore Packs. I think they call it "Deep Cleansing Face Strips" in the States. Just gotta wet my nose and then paste the strip on. 10 mins later, all the yucky blackheads are out! It works like a miracle! I even bought them for my boyfriend to use!

Re: Skin Care

I always always exfoliate, it really makes a difference. Lately I've been hooked on the Body Shop's Peachy Clean, it has little peach seed grits in it, and it smells awesome. :) I also use facial peels from time to time to get rid of dirt, sebum and dead skin.

This is bad... my friend used to prank call Proactiv, saying the stupidest things :P

Re: Skin Care
deniz, how often do you exfoliate?

i usually (i think) exfoliate about 3 times a week and that's after using a clay mask.

Re: Skin Care

Same here, 3 times a week. As to masks, lately I've gotten out of the habit of using them. I should use them more often :) What kind of clay masks do you use?

Re: Skin Care
I use the new Dove Cleansing Wipes - I can't be bothered to do the 3-step routine every day, and these do all of it in one step! I'm lucky as I don't break out very easily so these are enough - some people might need something stronger...
I get loads of black-heads though (who doesn't?!) - if any one has a remedy for these I'll be sooooooo happy to hear it....!!

Re: Skin Care
I'm new to this sight. Actually, I was just looking for a an undereye circle remedy and came across your post. I am 26 years old. Needless to say, stress...less sleep...more work and much less play |I has become my life at the moment. Where I work, is seven days a week twelves almost every day and let me just say, it is taking a toll on my skin. I had started breaking out worse than I have in my entire life including my teenage years. I have combination skin, which is really hard to find anything that doesn't make my skin overly dry or oily. Salicylic acid, if used too much, dries and over irritates my skin. I have to be able to balance it, without over doing it. I had looked into those famous "infomercials" everyone is talking about :) . I really wanted to try Proactive. It looks like a really good product. Unfortunately, I didn't want to pay that much (with the chance that it wouldn't work for me). So, with all that said, I was browsing at WalMart one day 8o and found a product that claimed to do the same thing and had the same kind of ingredients (Benzoyl Peroxide). So, I tried it, and have been using it for about two weeks now and my skin has really smoothed out again, my HORRIBLE blackheads are clearing up pretty fast, and I am not having a problem with continuous breaking out like before. The name of the kit is AcneFree Clear Skin Treatments. You get cleanser, toner, and a repairing lotion. The bottles contain the same amount as Proactive, but for only $14 as apposed to about $39. Proactive might work better. I may try it someday, but for now I'll stick to my cheaper stuff as long as it continues to work. I hope you find something that works for ya. Good luck!

p.s. if your skin still seems too dry...try using Avon Ultimat-E cream at night..not too much! During the day I use Eucerin (WalMart ;) ) sensitive skin facial lotion with Q10 (anti-wrinkle) with SPF 15. I use both over my repairing lotion (makes makeup go on smoother without flaking, too:D ). Both really make my skin very smooth.
