Speculations on future books?
So - what do you suppose is in store for Harry in the next book?

Toss out ideas and such here ---

Anything can happen to Harry (knowing Jim, trust me! He will put Harry through anything you could imagine and some things you couldn't!) -- what do YOU think will happen to him this time?? :)

Re: Speculations?
I suspect we will begin to learn more about Harry’s mother. After all Jim has been hinting about her dark past for the last three books. And just what was her relationship to his Godmother?:evil

Re: Speculations?
Yeah - that whole bit about Harry's Godmother and mother got smacked all around in one of the books -- wanna say "Summer Knight" or "Death Masks" - maybe it was "Fool Moon" - I can't remember now, all the info is all running together - but there are all kinds of tidbits that Jim leaves for us in the books that just make you wonder what could happen next or what will we be told next that completely contradicts what we've already come up with?

I'm pretty sure there will be more Harry 'backstory' in the upcoming books - but Jim's so tight-lipped about what he'll let us know and what he won't that we'll never know until the books release...

Jim, that tight-lipped jerk!
What's coming up in the Dresden Files? Well, I'll hazard some guesses. :)

Book 6, Blood Rites, will be out in August. I /thought/ I had already released some teaser chapters, but maybe I didn't. I could probably drop them onto the board here and see if they didn't give a better hint of what was on the way than a simple post on the boards.

That said, however, look for more of Thomas in book 6, as the luckless rogue of the White Court calls in some favors to hire Harry for a job protecting a movie producer he believes is going to be killed. Harry, being sort of deep in debt to Thomas, favorwise, agrees.

He doesn't really think to ask about what KIND of movies the friend of a White Court vampire produces, or about how it might get him involved with a whole lot more trouble than he expected, but then when it comes to his friends Harry can be extremely thick. :)

That's only one of his problems, though. Still stinging from her defeat at Bianca's masquerade three years ago, Mavra of the Black Court has returned to town with vengeance in mind. But Harry's learned a thing or three about being hunted--primarily that it sucks. Far better to be the hunter instead, and that means getting together a few friends--or competent mercenaries, at least--to settle up with Mavra before Mavra settles up with him.

Things start to go to hell when issues of loyalty, trust, and the love of family sail into the mess. Harry gets to find out more about his past, his origins, and his mother, and not much of it is anything but unpleasant. Between the monsters (not all of them inhuman), walking corpses, deadly curses and flying purple demon chimpanzees, the situation turns into one hell of a nasty payback for a few little favors past.

Hey, H2, drop me a line if you'd like to put up those sample chapters. :) longshot@jim-butcher.com

Meanwhile, I've begun work already on book 7, much of which is going to be set on Harry's birthday.

So, what can I say. You KNOW that isn't going to go well. :)

...that was you? ;)

Er - the only 'teaser' chapter I know of is in the back of "Death Masks" - the, well, you know - and I don't wanna spoil it for all the other kiddies who haven't read it yet.

Oh yes, please, guess - ;)

Thanx for the teaser 'guesses' about what's comin' up for Harry!

And Book 7? Harry's b-day? *shakes head* Oh no... this is never good - seeing how Buffy's b-day's always go - and knowing you - there's not a chance Harry's getting out of a birthday scott free...

WOW, what a suprise to see Jim post here.

Hi Jim, Love the books, Keep it up.

Anways each book in the series has always suprised me with the direction it has gone in. I mean going form the events in Summer Knight to the events in Death Masks kind of caught me of guard for a moment. Jim really knows how to throw his readers for a loop.

I just can't wait to find out more about Harry's mother, every little tidbit of info he puts in his books raises my curiosity more and more. Just answereing a lot of those little nagging question about Harry's past could fill up an entire book.

BTW after the events that happened in Death Masks who else is waiting to see when Murphy & Harry get together?

The best I can tell you is that the book will drop in August - that's all we know so far - (yes, even Jim, that's all he knows too...) -

And vampires are fun!! ;)

I'm sure Jim has plenty of other twists in store in book 6 - we just have to wait to read it... but, it'll be worth the wait - it always is!

Is Justin really gone?
I haven't read the sample chapters for Blood Rites, except for the one at the end of Death Masks. (I really hate being spoiled at all for books to the point that, if they have a chapter from book 7 at the end of Blood Rites, I'll tear it out and toss it.) I don't know if any of this will be in the next book or has been talked about, but something occurred to me last night.

We haven't seen the last of Justin.

I don't know whether Justin survived the magical fire that Harry enveloped him in (and, if he did, whose bones were found) or whether it's his spirit like the evil wizard in Grave Peril, but I think Justin is behind most if not all of what we've seen so far. At the end of Fool Moon, Harry talks about Victor Sells and how there must have been a more powerful wizard behind him in order for him to have gained so much knowledge so fast. And the FBI Hexenwulfen got their belts from some unknown wizard-type. Harry saw Denton kneeling at the feet of someone he couldn't see when he did the soul-gaze with Denton.

I need to go back and read the other three books again with this in mind, but it sure seems to me that Justin could have been behind a lot of what went on -- like stirring the Red Court up to get the war started with the White Council. And the attack at the stronghold at Archangel, which was led by Justin's mentor, Simon (I think that was his name). Remember that Harry is accused of being behind the massacre because some brilliant wizard figured that the information about the defenses had gone from Simon to Justin to Harry. And it seems that there was some malevolent force in Death Masks that was never quite identified, but I've got to read it again to be sure.

We know that Harry thought Elaine died in the fire, even though only one set of bones was found and then she shows up in Summer Knight. If he was wrong about Elaine, he could have been wrong about Justin, too.

Then again, I could be wrong! :)

Re: Is Justin really gone?
Hello all, I'm new and just jumping in to say hi.

Interesting idea though - Justin might not be dead? Well, that is a very interesting idea, yes, there is evidence that someone or something is making things get set into motion. Who gave Aurora the idea to do what she did in Summer Knight? I mean she was a Fae, and they don't come up with radical ideas very often - right? Also present in Death Masks They mention things about Harry's Mother again - Nicodemus knowing her or something like that. Is it just me or does it seem like she's not a good person - could she have planned on Justin finding him?

You covered most of the good points, I'm sad I can't cover them myself...

Still I'm still jazzed to meet all of you.

Re: Is Justin really gone?
True - Justin may still be around - you never can tell...

And anything's possible - the only thing I can tell you for certain about what will happen to Harry in upcoming books is that he will be put in some kind of danger, get hurt in some way, and pull through most of it with most of his body parts intact... *shrug* that's about it - and even that last bit isn't really a guarantee... knowing Jim...

Oh - btw - you *are* allowed to email Jim and tell him what you thought of the books... he likes that kind of thing... ;) and since *he* posted his email addy - yes - you can email him. Just in case you were too shy to do it - really - go ahead - every writer likes to hear feedback - good or bad.

I just met Jim this weekend - and I'll post a link to my little con-report in the Jim Butcher section...

since *he* posted his email addy

Where did he post his email address? I sent him a message via a form on his website months ago with a question I really need an answer to so that I can put up the interview I did with him at Dragon*Con. I never got a response. He had said to use the email address from his site, but there isn't one. Just a form. I don't know whether he didn't get the message or just didn't answer.

So where is the post with Jim's email address or, alternatively, what is his email address?

Jim - his email and post
His post is about 10 posts back --

He's signed in as "Harry Sure Suffers A Lot" --

He is a bit behind on his email -- in the last 2 weeks he's done 2 cons --- and he had an essay due today and he's supposed to be working on Dresden 7 and Alera 2 - so, a smidge busy -

but, his email is 'longshot@jim-butcher.com' (he doesn't mind if ppl send him mail)

put something like 'QUESTION' or 'question so I can post my interview' in the subject line - not sure that'll get you a response faster, but it's worth a shot.

honestly - he gets behind -- it took him like 2 months to get around to making that post he did here -- ;)

Thank you.

I sent him the message via the form in September, so I figure if he was going to get back to me, he would have done so by now. :-)

Re: Jim - his email and post
No problem ---

and honestly - he really COULD be that far behind --

When we were talking at lunch, he mentioned answering someone's first 'fan' email, then halfway through, realizing he'd talked to the person about a dozen times on-list already -- so, he really could be a bit backlogged --- ;)

Anyway -- back to speculation about the new books --

The first 4 chapters of "Blood Rites" are up on the site - (thank you, Jim!) -- and it gives you a hint ---

but what do you think is coming down the pipeline??

Justin and Elaine
Back to the notion that Justin may not be dead.... I was listening to the beginning of Storm Front again today and started thinking about how certain the murders had been done by a female wizard. Or "witch" as Harry calls them. When Harry found out that the real killer was Victor Sells, Harry's earlier insistence that the killer was probably a woman was never mentioned -- no "Gee, I guess I was wrong" from Harry or "What happened to the 'witches are just meaner' claim" from Murphy. That got me to thinking that maybe it was Elaine who was behind Victor's wizardry and that Justin is still behind Elaine in some way.

Also, who called on the phone? Harry goes to the police station to tell Murphy that it's impossible for a lone wizard to kill two people that way. He runs into the Three Eye junkie. He passes out in Murphy's office. Murphy takes him home. He calls Monica and Monica gives him the brushoff. Then Linda Randall calls him and makes a date for that night. Then Murphy gets him into bed. And the phone rings. Murphy answers it and there's no one there or it's a wrong number (I forget at the moment which). Right?

There's no way that a writer would put a phone ringing into a story and have it be a wrong number just at random. There has to be a reason for it. Someone called and didn't want to talk to Murphy. Maybe they didn't even want to talk to Harry, but we'll never know.

Was it Elaine? We now now she was alive, even though at that point Harry thought she was dead. Or was it maybe Justin?
