The Silmarillion Quote Game
The Rules are simple:
I will start out with a quote from the Silmarillion. The person who guesses where in the book is from and can give the sentence either before or after my quote wins and gets to post the next quote.

Example:

Quote: "Do I not strike near the truth?

Guess:
The scene in Doriath when Melian talks to Galadriel about the reasons why the Noldor came to Middle Earh, and guesses that for some reason they were driven from Aman.
Melian: Do I not strike near the truth?
Galadriel: Near, save that we were not driven forth, but came of our own will, and against that of the Valar.

If there is no answer for a week anyone can move in and post a new quote to keep the game going.

Quote 1: I would recall that shaft, if I could.

Reply:

Túrin Turambar enters Bar-en-Danwedh and Mîm's house, and they found out that Mîm's son, Khîm, has been slain.

"Then pity rose in Túrin's heart, and he said to Mîm: 'Alas! I would recall that shaft, if I could. Now Bar-en-Danwedh this house shall be called in truth; and if ever I come to any wealth, I will pay you a ransom of gold for your son, in token of sorrow, though it gladden your heart no more.'

Then Mîm rose, and looked long at Túrin. 'I hear you,' he said. 'You speak like a dwarf-lord of old; and at that I marvel. Now my heart is cooled, though it is not glad; and hi this house you may dwell, if you will; for I will pay my ransom.'"

Quote 2: "You renounce your friendship, even in the hour of our need".

Enjoy!

These were Fëanor's rather heated words to Olwë, at the havens when the Noldor want to leave for Middle Earth and the Teleri don't want to lend their ships.
"You renounce your friendship, even in the hour of our need," he said."Yet you were glad indeed to receive our aid when you came at last to these shores, fainthearted loiteres, and wellnigh emptyhanded."

Beleg asks for Thingol's leave to join Túrin, so he could protect him.

Then Thingol gave Beleg leave to do as he would; and he said: 'Beleg Cúthalion! For many deeds you have earned my thanks; but not the least is the finding of my fosterson. At this parting ask for any gift, and I will not deny it to you.'

These are Maeglin's words, when he finally sees the chance to avoid his father (who is away visiting dwarves) and escape to Gondolin, and tries to talk Aredhel, his mother, into it.
"Lady, let us depart while there is time? What hope is there in this wood for you or for me? Here we are held in bondage, and no profit shall I find here; for I have learned all that my father has to teach, or that the Naugrim will reveal to me."

*laughs* You should have tried with another quote.

Fëanor's reply to Maedhros when they arrived to Middle-Earth and he asked his father:

Now what ships and rowers will you spare to return, and whom shall they bear hither first? Fingon the valiant?

And Fëanor said:

None and none! What I have left behind I count now no loss; needless baggage on the road it has proved. Let those that cursed my name, curse me still, and whine their way back to the cages of the Valar! Let the ships burn!

Re: The Silmarillion Quote Game
This is from one of the most twisting and turning stories in the Silmarillion. After Níniel'd death, when Túrin returns and asks for Níniel. Brandir tell him that she is dead, but a woman says:
"Nay, lord, he is crazed. For he came here saying that you were dead, and he called it good tidings. But you live."
That leads to Brandir telling relly everything he knows, including all the trouble with who Túrin and Níniel are, which leads to Túrin getting even more angry and killing Brandir.

Húrin and Huor asked Turgon's leave to leave Gondolin for they missed their home:

Then Turgon granted his prayer, and he said: "By the way that you came you have leave to depart, if Thorondor is willing. I grieve at this parting; yet in a little while, as the Eldar account it, we may meet again."

This is Manwë, after Eärendil entered the undying lands, and the Valar were discussing what consequences it should have. Mados and Ulmo were of very different opinions, but in the end Manwë decided.
"In this matter the power of doom is given to me. The peril that he for the love of the Two Kindreds shall not fall upon Eärendil, nor shall it fall upon Elwig his wife, who entered into peril for the love of him; but they shall not walk again ever among Elves or Men in the Outer Lands. And this is my decree concerning them: to Eärendil and Elwig, and to their sons, shall be given leave each to choose freely to which kindred their fated shall be joined, and under which kindred they shall be judged."

And so Elrond and Elros were given that fateful choice also.

Reply:
This is after Fëanor's birth, when Míriel was consumed "in body and spirit" and spoke to Finwë:

'Never again shall I bear child; for strength that would have nourished the life of many has gone forth into Fëanor.'
Then Finwë was grieved, for the Noldor were in me youth of their days, and he desired to bring forth many children into the Miss of Aman; and he said: 'Surely there is healing in Aman? Here all weariness can find rest.' But when Míriel languished still, Finwë sought the counsel of Manwë, and Manwë delivered her to the care of Irmo in Lórien.

This was soon after Finrod Felagund became the first Eldar Elf to see Men. Namely Bëor and his followers. Other Elves were not so pleased to see them:

Now the Green-elves of Ossiriand were troubled by the coming of men, and when they heard that a lord of the Eldar from over the sea was among them they sent messengers to Felagund. "Lord," they said, "If you have power over these newcomers, bid them return by the ways that they came, or else go forward. For we desire no strangers in this land to break the peace in which we live. And these folk are hewers of trees and hunters of beasts; Therefore we are their unfriends, and if they will not depart we shall afflict them in all ways that we can."

This is after Beleg's death and burial, when Gwindor brought Túrin to the south, to Eithel Ivrin, and comforted him.

Then Gwindor said: 'This is a strange blade, and unlike any that I have seen in Middle-earth. It mourns for Beleg even as you do. But be comforted; for I return to Nargothrond of the house of Finarfin, and you shall come with me, and be healed and renewed.'
'Who are you?' said Túrin.
'A wandering Elf, a thrall escaped, whom Beleg met and comforted,' said Gwindor. 'Yet once I was Gwindor son of Guilin, a lord of Nargothrond, until I went to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, and was enslaved in Angband.'

Galadriel had spoken about the Silmarils to Melian, who in turn had told King Thingol - which filled him with grief and foreboding. Then when sons of Finarfin came to Beleriand to visit their sister:

Then Thingol, being greatly moved, spoke in anger to Finrod, saying: 'Ill have you done to me, kinsman, to conceal so great matters from me. For now I have learned of all the evil deeds of the Noldor.'
But Finrod answered: 'What ill have I done you, lord? Or what evil deed have the Noldor done in all your realm to grieve you?

Then Angrod spoke out against the sons of Fëanor, and Melian reminded then that the shodow of Mandos lay on them also.

Ai. This is the speech of Maedhros and Maglor after Eonwë's offer to return to Valinor to be judged there; Maglor would have agreed but Maedhros convinced him to take the silmarils and to fulfill the Oath.

Then Maglor desired indeed to submit, for his heart was sorrowful, and he said: The oath says not that we may not bide our time, and it may be that in Valinor all shall be forgiven and forgot, and we shall come into our own in peace. But Maedhros answered that if they returned to Aman but the favour of the Valar were withheld from them, then their oath would still remain, but its fulfilment be beyond all hope.

This is Yavanna. She is concerned about the coming of the elves and what impact that might have on Arda:

"King of Arda, is it true, as Aule hath said to me, that the Children when they come shall have dominion over all things of my labour, to do as they will therewith?"
"It is true," said Manwe. "But why dost thou ask, for thou hadst no need of the teachings of Aule?"
Then Yavanna was isltent and looked into her own thought. And she answered: "Because my heart is anxious, thinking of the days to come. All my works are dear to me. Is it not enough that Melkor should have marred so many? Shall nothing that I have devised be free from the dominion of others?"

(Personally I think that might have been the origin of the Ents.)

Ai, a sad part of The Silmarillion and especially for the Edain; how Sauron knew of Barahir and his outlaws. Poor, poor Gorlim and cruel Sauron.

Now Gorlim would have drawn back, but daunted by the eyes of Sauron he told at last all that he would know. Then Sauron laughed; and he mocked Gorlim, and revealed to him that he had only seen a phantom devised by wizardry to entrap him; for Eilinel was dead. "Nonetheless I will grant thy prayer," said Sauron; "and thou shalt go to Eilinel, and be set free of my service." Then he put him cruelly to death.

Ah, that nice scene where Curufin and Celegorm attack Beren and Luthien. With the help of Huan the attack goes..not as planned and in the end Beren takes borth curufin's weapons and horse.
"Your horse," he said, "I keep for the service of Luthien, and it may be accounted happy to be free of such a master."
Then Curufin cursed Beren under cloud and sky. "Go hence," he said, "unto a swift and bitter death."

Then Curufin tried to kill Luthien with Celegorm's bow.

At the time when the unrest in Valinor, with Feanor getting rebellious against the Valar, starts Fingolfin talks to his father:
"King and father, wilt thou not restrain the pride of our brother, Curufinwe, who is called the Spirit of Fire, all too truly? By what right does he speak for all our people, as if he were King? Thou it was who long ago spoke before the Quendi, bidding them accept the summons of the Valar to Aman. Thou it was that led the Noldor upon the long road through the perils of Middle-Earth to the light of Eldamar. If thou dost not now repent of it, two sons at least thou hast to honour thy words."
And Feanor walks in on this and gets all jealous, and in the end even threatens Fingolfin with his sword.

(I am aware that a lot of dots above 'e' are missing, I just can't get my computer to write them at the momemt, sorry.)

Quote 19:

Oh, Eru. Thus spoke Huor son of Galdor to Turgon last time they met in the battle that would be later recorded as the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. The battle was lost and the Lords of the House of Hador, Húrin and Huor, sacrificed themselves and his men (and Dor-lómin) to save the King of Gondolin.

The field was lost; but still Húrin and Huor and the remnant of the house of Hador stood firm with Turgon of Gondolin, and the hosts of Morgoth could not yet win the Pass of Sirion. Then Húrin spoke to Turgon, saying: "Go now, lord, while time is! For in you lives the last hope of the Eldar, and while Gondolin stands Morgoth shall still know fear in his heart."

But Turgon answered: "Not long now can Gondolin be hidden; and being discovered it must fall."

Then Huor spoke and said: "Yet if it stands but a little while, then out of your house shall come the hope of Elves and Men. This I say to you, lord, with the eyes of death: though we part here for ever, and I shall not look on your white walls again, from you and from me a new star shall arise. Farewell!"

And years after, Tuor son of Huor and Idril daughter of Turgon met in Gondolin, and they got married. And from them arose a bright star, Eärendil by name.

These are the last words spoken by Finrod, when he and Beren were in the pits of Sauron. A wolf had come and killed all their companions one by one, and then, when the wolf returned and wanted to take Beren Finrod fought with him, defeated him, but was mortally wounded in the process. He said shortly before he died:
"I go now to my long rest in the timeless halls beyond the seas and the Mountains of Aman. It will be long ere I am seen among the Noldor again; and it may be that we shall not meet a second time in death or life, for the fates of our kinreds are apart. Farewell!"
