The Spirit of Darkness
Friedrich Nietzsche who was born 1844 and His Father was a Lutheran pastor. Nietzsche is famous for claiming that God is dead.

Sigmund Freud expressed his diagnosis of Nietzsche by saying that Friedrich knew himself better than any human being of the time.

Sad to see that a leader in the field claims that a man like Nietzsche is the great example of one knowing themselves. This particular claim is exactly contradictory to the bible principles.

The bible says a man who is not born again is blind by the god of this world who the bible calls satan and is known as the devil.

Nietzsche in his document which was more like a parable called "The Madman" was a horrid dialog about how God is dead and how we murdered Him. He questions many things about God. It was insight to New Age thinking but then he asks "Must we not ourselves become gods?

It is a form of New Age thinking the idea that we are the god within. The New Age movement has different varieties and flavors for their god within doctrines but it all boils down that God does not exist and we are gods.

Nietzsche had refueled a low burning fire to make it even greater when He said God is dead. In the sixties we can see that the peace sign which is an upside down cross was the popular wear among the hippies and flower childs. Along with their peace sign would at times read God is dead.

Now we are starting to see the true fruits of this New Age movement flourish in full bloom.

Nietzsche seemed to die as an unhappy man and finally died in an insane asylum in 1900.

Many writings were becoming more exposed than ever before with such boldness against God. As if the shelves that held so much dust around these anti God books had resurrected themselves as a militant tool for the atheists and skeptics.

New writings became famous when it was against God and more writings than ever expressed the love of the idea that God is dead.

What happened? I would only say countless of books have been written on this topic that would answer such questions as touching this topic.

What can we say? Well, as Paul said he wanted to to remind his flock of the things that we have already known.

I think what may have happened is many Christians were not living the faith they proclaimed. Our faith surely was not like the old time European greats with such powerful revivals that history has echoed out.

The churches started to create many divisions and Darwinism seemed to be thought of as the real solution to know the truth.

It could be added that Kant's concept that the Universe is big and old and that our existence came by chance only enforced the idea that God is dead. Enlightened with Hume's powerful persuasion that the "Supernatural" with "Superstition" seemed to make sense to the world and yet the church seemed to lay back and fold their wings.

Perhaps Darwin's advocate Thomas Huxley who is known as Darwin's Bulldog who showed such great zeal for evolution and the Darwin theories that he said the Theologians were like the strangled snakes that laid by Hercules. That science was causing the Theologians to bleed and cause them to be crushed. That orthodoxy is the bourbon of the world of thought. He went to say that it learns not and neither can forget.

Obviously Huxley's god is the Supremacy of Science. This god of his has lead many disciples of science to the path of doom. Jesus said let the blind lead the blind so then should we be shocked? I think not. We Christians knew this would happen and that the Bible predicted in the last days that great boasters and scoffers would speak against God.

We know that this did not just happen over night. We can see how the Supremacy of Science was the zeitgeist for most of this last century.

Aldous Huxley disagreed with his grandfather Thomas Huxley who said science has never explained anything but said the more we know from science the greater the world becomes and is profounder the surrounding darkness.

Sad to say but this world will remain in darkness but men will always remain in obscurity. Science will not find what men are looking for. The truth is out there as they say but the truth is not out there but only in God through His son Christ Jesus.

Even Aldous looked for spiritual substance but in all the wrong places such as in eastern mysticism and drugs.

G.K. Chesterton said it well in his apologetic classic Orthodoxy called: The Romance of Faith.... "When men stop believing in God, the danger is not that they will believe nothing. The danger is that they will believe anything."

How do you see the causes and the why's concerning this topic?

Re: The Spirit of Darkness
I think you have some good thoughts there bro. :)

Scientism has definately been becoming more and more prevelent in the last few centuries. But, as you said they are looking out there and in themselves for the truth, and they don't even realize that Jesus IS the truth; not just the truth in some feel good, "religioin-y" areas, in everything. I think of something Fr. Copleston once said:

"The attempt to by-pass or exclude metaphysics will often be found to involve a concealed metaphysical assumption, an unavowed theory of being. In other words, the theory that scientific advance pushes metaphysics out of the picture is mistaken. Metaphysics simply reappears in the form of concealed assumptions." Copleston, Frederick, S.J.; A History of Philosophy, Vol. VIII, p.120. Emp. mine.

Even some secular scientists have been realizing, by God's providence, that they are--to use an analogy--breathing air out in order to present arguments for why air doesn't exist:

"These scientific games are without genuine epistemological content unless we superimpose on them some sort of metaphysical principle which will say that the game, as specified by the methodology, gives us the best chance of approaching the truth." Imre Lakatos; The Methodology of Reseach Programmes, Cambridge: the University Press, 1980, p. 122. Emp. mine.

Cornelius Van Til would argue (convincingly, imo), along with C.S. Lewis in many places, that the unbeliever, by turning from the true God who has revealed Himself in the Bible, has destroyed any foundation for any type of reasoning or knowledge (--notwithstanding the actual knowledge they DO have of course, which God graciously allows to pervade their sin hardened hearts--the grace by which they live and move and have their being (Pro. 9:10, Acts 17:28)).

"The ancient man approached God (or even the gods) as the accused person approaches his judge. For the modern man the roles are reversed. He is the judge: God is in the dock. He is quite a kindly judge: if God should have a reasonable defence for being the god who permits war, poverty and disease, he is ready to listen to it. The trial may even end in God's acquittal. But the important thing is that Man is on the Bench and God in the Dock." C.S. Lweis; God in the Dock, Eerdmans: 2001 reprint, p. 244.

But, we know that they already knew that to begin with--that they "suppress the truth in unrighteousness" because "wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men." They don't want anything to do with the wrath of God, and so, as you so aptly pointed out, they have said in their heart "I will ascend into the heavens and exalt my throne above the stars...I will make myself as the Most High," because the "god of this world has blinded their eyes."

Again, good insight into the facts, I think you did a good job in summarizing the present situation and why it came about. :)
