The great big Erikson vs. Martin thread
On both the Malaz and asoiaf forums, there seems to be a load of people who prefer one, and a load who prefer the other. Which is fine. Except they keep arguiong about which is best. Well, here is the place to say what you think... (I would have done this as a poll, but i couldn't find how:cry )

Personally, i much prefer Erikson, though Martin is good as well...

Re: The great big Erikson vs. Martin thread
I like Erickson, but much prefer Martin. Two reasons - Erikson's characters sometimes feel a bit flat, lacking in real personality (Coltaine being an exception, but even he doesn't match up to Martin's characters). Secondly, Erikson has way too much magic in his books for my taste. I prefer sorcery to be subtle, difficult and creepy.

Having said that, I haven't read MoI or HoC yet.

At the moment, I prefer reading the Erikson books to the Martin books. I just think Erikson's are more engaging and involving, and I enjoy them a lot more.

Many places refuse to publish Erikson. For example, in the US, they think the storyline is too complicated to publish, so it might be the same problem there, nedisreal, or maybe that there wouldn't be enough demand, but anyway, it rocks!:cdot

I love both Erikson and Martin, but I prefer the latter due to the better characters.

Re: The great big Erikson vs. Martin thread
Damn, my first Erickson-bashing post didn't make it.
Things I dislike in Erickson's books :
- his characters, flat and uninteresting (esp. Malazan soldiers), except some like Felisin
- the lack of background and political maneuvers
- most of his characters are uber-something, be it soldiers, assassins or wizards
- Seguleh ('nuf said)
- the Empress (reminds me of Stalin)
- the reactions of his characters are unbelievable

Oh, and Garden of the Moon is way too complicated and confusing.

he he
well, its an opinion i suppose, and we're all allowed opinions :puke

ahem
1. Characters like QB are uninteresting? What book were you reading mate?

2. Well, they aint political kinda books (like asoiaf), its more to do with the fighting, not the damned dull diplomacy:p :pissoff

3. Ahem, even if they are uber-characters, they are all restrained by something, be it themselves, or by others.

4. Heh, whats wrong with the Seguleh, they're cool :p :poke

5. And thats bad because...?

Who's QB ? I haven't read House of Chains.

2. Well, they aint political kinda books (like asoiaf), its more to do with the fighting, not the damned dull diplomacy

Fight fight fight gets boring after a while, especially if it involves Seguleh.

3. Ahem, even if they are uber-characters, they are all restrained by something, be it themselves, or by others.

Maybe, but does it make them more interesting & believable ?

4. Heh, whats wrong with the Seguleh, they're cool

I have a problem with mere humans being more powerful than ascendants.

5. And thats bad because...?

Because she is supposed to be one of the good guys after Deadhouse Gates.

"These Songs will not be to everyone's taste, for there is little variation among them, all of them containing the same words, such as: hero, knight, horseman, galley slave, serpent, dragon, wolf, lion, eagle, falcon's nest and sword, sabres, lances, necklets, medallions, decrees, heads chopped off, slaves carried away, etc. May those who find them pleasing sing them; may those who do not, go off to sleep."

Erickson's books
It's basically unrealistic military fantasy. You have the good Malazan empire, who colonizes people for their own good. The Malazan army is the best human army in the world, they have powerful wizards and demons as well, not to mention legions of undead warriors.
Erickson doesn't pay much attention to character developpment and most of his characters are overpowered (ie, half of them are potential gods). Oh, and the first book is really a hard read, it's completely confusing, like he tried to pack 3 or 4 books in one.
The good points are :
- an original religious system (all gods have been mortals before)
- the magic system is original too, though I'm not really sure to fully understand it
- the scale of the story is really impressive
- there are some good fights and from time to time, an original character
- it's gory

Haven't read Erikson because

I don't want to order it online ;)

However i'll pick it up when it hits stateside....though i have the sneaking suspicion it isn't my cup o' tea

I love politics and intense characterization, and battles as a whole don't intrest me much (although duels are another story :) )
