The official HD-DVD / Blu-Ray Thread
ony STILL can't get their 50GB dual-layered Blu-ray Discs to work right on the existing and prototype players. The current Samsung player, as shipped, will not play them. How do you like them apples?

Re: Samsung Blu-ray player can't play dual-layer discs
This rush to develop High Tech for what is a very simple thing (From what I gather - putting a disc into a DVD player and enjoying the presentation) is getting very crazy. High Definition is good enough, and while they may figuure more profits through tech, they may get more respect from the customers by producing quality presentations to actually go with the tech.

The young audience already mainly veiws DVDs through other means, may it be through computers or Game Systems, and it's a given that they care more for the tech of their game systems than their DVD players (DVD players=The Stone Age more or less).

The Adult audience is possibly getting very sick and tired of having to "Upgrade" their systems with the very limited amount of money they have almost every year. It's about time to stop with all of this and concentrate on the actual DVDs and wait until the new tech works at 100% without fail.

Pioneer Denies Combo Blu-ray/HD DVD Burner Plans

We reported last Friday that Pioneer was planning to release its BDR-103 burner as a combo HD DVD/Blu-ray drive, but now the company denies any such thing. A Pioneer rep said his comments made to the press last week were "taken out of context," and when asked if the company had any plans to support such a combo drive, he responded:

"Currently we have no plans to do so..... however, Pioneer will monitor the market situation with other formats and will consider to adopt those formats as and where the market is demanding it".
So the saga continues. It's one more denial after false hopes were raised, but we're still thinking this combo player is inevitable, and all it will take is just a substantial payment to Sony to make it a reality. Only problem is, that payment might need to be a few zillion dollars, and might only work when Sony has nearly starved itself out of existence by mulishly standing by yet another dopey idea.

Re: The official HD-DVD / Blu-Ray Thread
In a bit of high-def related news today, Sony has announced that its worldwide shipment of Blu-ray Disc-equipped PlayStation 3 game systems will total just 2 million units this year - about half of the company's original estimate. Only approximately 400,000 units will be available in the U.S. for the 11/17 debut, but some 1.2 million additional units will be shipped into the U.S. by the end of the year. Sony has also pushed back the European launch of the system until March of next year. The reason for all this is a worldwide shortage of the blue-laser diodes needed for the Blu-ray Disc drives in each system. Other Blu-ray Disc manufacturers, however, are claiming they haven't been affected by the shortage. Panasonic apparently still plans to launch its BD player later this month, and Pioneer's Andy Parsons confirmed to me last night (at the launch of the first Pioneer retail store here in Orange County, CA) that they expect to ship their first BD player in October.

Re: The official HD-DVD / Blu-Ray Thread
Sony recently announced that it plans to release a fully functional Blu-ray recorder in Japan by the end of the year. It won't be the first such Blu-ray recorder released by the company (the BDZ-S77 was released in 2003 but couldn't play commercial Blu-ray discs and could only record onto discs enclosed inside cartridges; that's it up above), but this yet-unnamed recorder will actually be useful: it'll record onto normal, 25GB or 50GB non-cartridge Blu-ray discs and it'll play back commercial Blu-ray discs no problem. Good for Sony, making their Blu-ray players actually play Blu-ray content.

Sony intends on pushing the Blu-ray recorder as part of a high definition celebration of life in Japan during the upcoming months. No price or release date—Japanese or otherwise—has been released thus far.

Re: The official HD-DVD / Blu-Ray Thread
Universal, the studio has just announced the release of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas on 11/21 as an HD-DVD/DVD combo title (SRP $34.98).

Also today, Sony has announced the Blu-ray Disc release of Monster House (10/24) and Little Man (11/7). We've updated the High-Def Release List accordingly.

By the way, as a follow up on a story we've reported on previously, I can tell you with confidence now that 50GB BD-ROM discs DO work on the Samsung BD-P1000. I visited one of the Hollywood studios yesterday before the taping of Attack of the Show, and got the chance to see a production movie title (can't say what it was unfortunately, but you'll know soon enough) on the dual-layered Blu-ray Disc media. I held it in my hands and watched it play successfully with my own eyes. I even watched the seamless switch between layers occur without a glitch. Apparently the problem we reported on previously was related to BD-R media only - check discs that were being used to test authoring, that the player was having difficulty with. Just know that the final product 50GB BD-ROMs SHOULD work on your players without problems.

On a related note, I'm being told that Samsung's first public firmware upgrade for the BD-P1000 is tentatively expected sometime later this month or early in October. We'll let you know when it's available and how to get it.

And on the HD-DVD end of things, Toshiba has just announced the development of a single-sided, triple-layered DVD/HD-DVD combo disc configuration, that allows for 30GB of data storage on the HD layers and 4.7GB on the standard DVD layer.

Next-Gen HD DVD From Toshiba For 2006

Posted Thu Sep 14, 2006, 2:34 PM ET — By Shane Buettner

Toshiba fired another salvo in the ongoing next-gen HD disc format war by announcing that it will have its second-generation HD DVD players to market by the end of 2006. The $499 HD-A2 will street in October, with the step-up $999 HD-XA2 following in December.
The HD-XA2 is by far the more interesting and exciting beast of the two new players. While its predecessor was “limited” to 1080i output, the new player will feature 1080p/60 output (from native HD DVD discs and also upconverted from DVD) and will be one of the first components sold to consumers that will feature an HDMI version 1.3 output. The video DACs are spec’d for major oversampling, operating at a whopping 297Mhz/12-bits.

Although HDMI 1.3 offers improved video specs, what’s of the most immediate interest to us is that it will transmit the new audio codecs from Dolby and DTS in their native digital form when connected to a compatible AVR or pre/pro.

Both new players will decode both Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby’s lossless TrueHD (all 5.1-channels worth!) for output through the player’s multichannel analog output. The players will also transcode DD+ and TrueHD to hi-res PCM for output via HDMI. While DTS-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio will be supported over HDMI 1.3 it does not appear the format will supported at full resolution in either player over the analog outs.

Both players are housed in newer, far slimmer cabinets and, ahem, are claimed to offer much improved response times and superior remotes. The HD-A2 doesn’t offer 1080p output and will not feature HDMI version 1.3. The A2 will support multichannel Dolby TrueHD, and does feature HDMI version 1.2a (whatever that is). Other than that it appears, more or less, to be an HD-A1 in a slicker box with the latest firmware upgrades pre-installed.
