Catholic Priests Admit 'Homosexual Subculture'

Amidst persistent rumors that the Catholic Church is harboring homosexual clergy, the Association for the Sociology of Religion was to release Friday the results of a survey confirming the reality.
Church policy does not implicitly forbid ordaining homosexual men, although the Vatican does not endorse the action.
According to the survey, more than half of all Roman Catholic priests identified a "homosexual subculture" in their diocese or seminary, the Washington Post reported.
The survey of 1,200 priests, conducted in spring 2001, did not question the priests' sexual orientation, "but merely collected their impressions of their environment."
Results show that 19 percent of priests said a subculture "clearly" existed in their diocese or religious institute, and 36 percent said it "probably" did. Homosexual activity in seminaries was revealed to occur at 19 percent and 26 percent, respectively.
Further, results showed a younger priests ages 25 to 35 reported the occurrence of homosexual activity at a greater rate than priests 66 and older. Forty-seven percent of the younger priests admitted that there was "clearly" a gay subculture in their seminary, compared to only 3 percent of those older priests.
The survey also showed that 56 percent of priests believed celibacy should be a matter of "personal choice."
