Why the song "Ćnema" is so named...
We all know that an enema is when you have the unwanted "sh-t" washed out of your anus, thus cleansing it. Well Ćnema is essentially the same thing. In the song, Maynard speaks about wanting the world to come to an end by means of rains, tidal waves, and earthquakes and goes on listing off the reasons why he wishes this which are all basically the "sh-t" of the world. And in doing so, cleanses the world of these unwanted things.
I honestly think the title is a great metaphore for what he's trying to say in the song. I can't believe I never noticed nor even thought about why the song was titled "Ćnema" before, it just seems to obvious now that I've realised it.
Cuz I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna watch it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.
The first time I heard Ćnima I laughed at the irony of the title...
But I wonder what the signifigance of the "Ć" is...And if it means anything to be spelled that way...
I also wonder how it's pronounced...Most people pronounce it "Enima", and that seems accurate given the obvious wordplay, but my best friend (who is German and speaks the language fluently) tells me that the "Ć" symbol meshed to gether usually produces a long "I" sound...making the pronunciation more like "EYEnima"...This is how I pronounce it...but then on the live webcast Tool, themselves, pronounced it like "AHnima"....

Ć is an 'aesc', pronounced 'ash'. It was a rune used in Old English to represent the sound 'a' as in modern English 'cat'. The word itself actually meant an ash-tree. So if pronouncing Ćnema using Old English it would be pronounced ah-nema. So the pronunciation on the Tool Webcast you heard was correct. Hope that helps.

While the "Enema" part is fairly obvious to everyone, the little A doohickey attached to it refers to the Latin word "anima" which was the spirit inherent in everything. so the title could be construed as being about spiritual cleansing, since it's about the utter destruction of all the shallow, counter-productive people that inhabit our world (in frightening numbers, I might add).the title is a blend of those two words, kind of like with "Pushit" ("push" and "@#%$" combined...). Or I could be completely wrong...odds are, none of us will ever know, and that's the real beauty of TooL...teaching us to think for ourselves by not giving us any of the answers.
Re: Why the song "Ćnema" is so named...
Ive also scene other sites the relate Ćnema to Carl Jung who was a famous psychologist. He coined the term anima, which i believe had something to do with a person's feminine or masculine side. if you do a search for Carl Jung, i'm sure youll be able to find out more info on that.
"I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human. I'm reaching up and reaching out, I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me. And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been. Spiral out...keep going........
Re: Why the song "Ćnema" is so named...
The terms are Greek, closely related to word "anémos," meaning breath, wind, spirit.
Carl Jung and Freud popularized the terms and set them in a new context. Specifically, the two "aspects" representing the masculine and feminine as an integral part of a being. And more specifically, a defiency or perversion of either results in the downfall of the individual and to a greater extent, the individual's society. For it takes a village to raise a child, and the People, in the end, is We.
ćnima - the femine aspect [of the spirit]; the feminine spirit.
ćnimus - the masculine, a hostile spirit residing within (surviving in the word "animosity").
My posit, as many of you might find at another Toolboard, is that this song is about cleansing the Spirit of the corrupted masculine and reviving the feminine to bring balance and healing. One Wound, One Shame - the womb bleeds, why must Man take this as a signal of inferiority? Why do we, as males and females indoctrinated, wound ourselves by wounding our femine "sides" and by physically expressing animosity towards our "b*tch," our "c*nt," our "ball and chain."
Consider that in our culture we "flush" the evidence of our reproductive status down the pot. It is nasty, dirty, a loathsome burden. Perhaps we should flush the stigma applied to the endometrium, and not the endometrium. Perhaps we should flush the stigma attached to the penis, and realize it is not a spear signifying our right to dominion. Perhaps we should embrace our humanity, our balanced gender essence, and quit trying to castrate ourselves on both sides of the mothereffing coin.
I want to see it come down. Bring it down. Suck it down. Flush it down.
Re: Why the song "Ćnema" is so named...
Ćnima - enema + anima
enema = the cleansing of the anus
anima = a latin word for soul
enema + anima = Ćnima - the cleansing of the soul
Ć- pronounced, "O" so Ćnima would be pronounced onoma. it was used by some Dr. (forgot name) as a kind of signature, and is classified as a latin symbol in windows.
the song Ćnima is about cleansing the world of the @#%$ hole LA, which is adapted from a brilliant bill hicks piece called "goodbye you lizard scum" from his album "arizona bay". hicks was tools inspiration for alot of things, and as he did soon before Ćnima came to exist, they dedicated the album to him, and used him as an inspiration for alot of things.

Inspiration.
I tired of Maynard getting all of the credit for 'Tool'. Maynard James Keenan is a genius. But, they're are three other geniuses that make up the entire band. They all know exactly what they are doing, and the art and music they create together as a whole is beyond the simple word of beautiful. I was first attracted to this band from their album artwork and music videos. It was incredible. Nothing I have ever seen. And then I listened to the music. Amazing. In my eyes, no other band in the world has the powers of these four gentlemen. Its many steps ahead of normal music. Through music and art, they have taught me more than any thirty thousand dollar college could give me. This unique communication has changed my life and inpired me in several differnet ways.

Some of you
seem to be confusing the album title, AENIMA, and the song AENEMA. Both are spelt differently and have their own meanings.
