Wing clipping (Need advice NOT A DEBATE) Hi i just got my female lovie clipped today by an avian vet. He took the 5 first five primarys off, and told me that if she can still gain hieght then come back and he'll take some more off for free. Well i need to know how high can your birds fly from ground upward's with clipped wings ? She can slowing gain hieght BUT only about the hieght from floor to the top of a chair. So she can fly to the chair, then to picture frame then to curtain rail so she isn't really depending on me is she ? so should i get a few more feathers clipped to lower her flight ? |

Re: Wing clipping (Need advice NOT A DEBATE)
I think you should go back to the vet and get her a little bit more grounded. Just dont go too short or she'll crash to the ground and hurt herself.
Both my budgies were clipped so they couldnt fly at all - not even gain height (the pet store clipped them and Bender was clipped when I got him) it made tameing them 120% easier. Both can fly now and Bird'O who came really tame I mean really tame can now fly freely and is still tame. (Bender grew in his feathers and can fly now he's not as tame because his wings werent clipped at as long and prefers Bird'Os company to mine) Christa did you decide on a name? |

Re: Wing clipping (Need advice NOT A DEBATE) That's about how much height my birds can get with their wings clipped so I'd say it's really up to you. However, if you do go too short, then it becomes uncomfortable and even dangerous for the bird. With a proper clipped they should be able to gain a little height, I'd say 2-3 feet high, a little more for very strong flyers I think. ~ Taffy, her spoiled little Baby, their psychotic Flamie Boy and the new flock member, Indy |

Re: Wing clipping (Need advice NOT A DEBATE) How much of that height was flying and how much was vertical leap? I've heard clipped lovies can still jump a good 2 feet. When Casper was clipped, he was still able to hop up from the floor to his cage, with a little assistance from flapping those nubs |

Re: Wing clipping (Need advice NOT A DEBATE) She can fly about 4 feet length perhaps more if the room was longer. Im going to take her to be clipped again today, in hope that she'll just miss the hieght of the chair so she'll have to depend on me more. P.S I have two names that stick in my head for her which was suggested by 2nd hand roses and some one else (sorry i cant renmember names ) "Zee" and "ZaZu" <----- Zazu is the bird from lion king right ? cos them two names stick in my head. |

Re: Wing clipping (Need advice NOT A DEBATE) The purpose of wing clipping is to limit flight, not eliminate it. A proper wing clip is usually 5-7 primaries, both wings equal and even. Lovebirds tend to be very strong flyers, so I might clip one more primary on each wing, but not more than that. I usually clip 5 on each wing and that seems to be enough to keep my pet lovies tame. Re: Wing clipping (Need advice NOT A DEBATE) I got her clipped she can get to up one or two foot high and glide down if shes high up. Havnt seen any improvement in tameing, she wont come out of her cage by her own free will and i dont want to grab her. |
