here' my Gainesville NPR interview, again recorded with my handy video phone.

Also our last casting call got in the Jax paper today. Here's a link to it (not sure if you have to subscribe)

www.jacksonville.com/tu-o...4161.shtml

If that doesn't work, here' a cpy and paste of the text

"Casting call: A local filmmaker is looking for cast and crew for a movie he's making about one of the most notorious crimes in recent Florida history.

Josh Townsend was a high school student in Gainesville when Danny Rolling killed five college students in 1990. He's turning that experience into an independent film called The Gainesville Ripper, which follows the effects of the crime on the college town.

The casting call is at 11 a.m. Sunday at Boomtown Subterranea, 140 W. Monroe St. in downtown Jacksonville. Townsend said he is looking for serious actors only. The Rolling role has already been filled. Filming will take place on weekends beginning in late April. Most of the film will be shot in Jacksonville, with some exterior shots in Gainesville. Re: GAINESVILLE RIPPER GOREZONE BLOG
Orlando channel 2 is driving to do an interview with me at my house in my office where I edit and write and stuff. This will be next week. That TV station covers 9 counties in Florida. BIg stuff there. TV20 Gainesville is like a hick/redneck news show compared to Orlando channel 2.

I swear I didn't send out any press releases except for one to the Gainesville newspaper. That's it...one. All these other interviews and stuff is coming people seeing the Gainesville stuff I guess. It's like the fact that I'm making Gainesville Ripper is spreading like wildfire across Florida.

I'm 100 times more controversial than MSP and I haven't even yelled action yet. hehehe (had to say that)

Re: GAINESVILLE RIPPER GOREZONE BLOG
TALKING TO THE PRESS

Ok the point of this is for you guys to learn my mistakes, blind luck ect. So here's what I've learned about talking to the press. I thought this part would come much later, like after the movie was finished, but Gainesville Ripper has taken on a life of it's own.

1 - KEEP YOUR ANSWERS SHORT AND TO THE POINT
Never ramble on and never answer with more than two sentences. You want to give them as little to pick through as possible. No more than two sentence answers isn't some rule I was told it's just what I learned after doing interviews and watching the final project.

2 - THE BEST INTERVIEWS ARE "LIVE FEED" INTERVIEWS
For the 5:30 news we did a live two question interview in front of the memorial for the students. It's scarier doing it live cause you can't stutter or think about anything. Also you have to answer fast which makes it even harder. Still....
LIVE INTERVIEWS ARE WAY BETTER simply because they can't chop up what you say. It's live so it's the only time you have to make sure the people watching hear exactly what you want them to.

3 - DRESS NICE BUT DON'T LOOK LIKE A SUIT
I wanted so bad to wear a Rotten Cotton shirt or something but I knew (and was told by many people) that it was a bad idea. I wore a stylish Dickies button up and some kinda-slacks. My directing trademark is my camo hats, but I went ahead and put on a my Battle Royale hat instead so people 'who know' would understand from the Battle Royale hat that I wasn't some cookie cutter director. Since I couldn't wear a horror shirt I felt I had to 'represent' somehow.

From now on, I'm wearing my camo hats though. Even if I'm in a suit and tie that camo hat will not leave my head if pics or video is being taken. The hat is my 'signature'. A way for people to differentiate me from every other wanna-be director out there.

So dress nice, but throw some individuality. To paraphrase a quote from Wild At Heart "This here camo hat is a symbol of my individuality and belief in personal freedom"

That's all for now. Remember I'm not in anyway an expert and have never been to school for any of this director/filmmaking stuff. I'm just letting you guys in on the filmmaking process from my point of view. Use this advise at your own risk. I really wish I had more journals like this to read so that why I'm taking the time to do this 'secret-tell all' journal. Aside from actually working on other peoples films, these making-of journal things (like the one Peter Jackson did for King Kong) have been the most help when comes to figuring out THE BEST WAY to make a movie.

Re: GAINESVILLE RIPPER GOREZONE BLOG
Akbar made a vhs tape of the news show so I'll get it tommorow at the casting call and have a good quality clip on the net by Monday.

Just picked up the keys to the place that letting us hold auditions. It's an exttremely big fancy resterant, bar, theater that is fuckin classy as hell and free cause the owner acted in a movie I worked on (It's all about trading favor Julie and Deadgguy get on a set).

Im gonna buy soda and sell 'em for a dollar to make back a little of the money this is costing me. IT cost $20 just to print sides and actor info sheets.

BTW a "side" is the few pages of script you hand out fro the actor to read. I made 6 different sets of sides depending on what part the aactor looks like they should read for. I also made diff sides for people who we have already read and this is thier callback.

Gotta go. Christianna (blonde Liz from Loyalty) just broke up with her boyfriend and is having a party. Hopefully I'll get to drunk to drive and have to crash in her bed with her.

Re: GAINESVILLE RIPPER GOREZONE BLOG
Small crisis today.

Had an investor tell me that the investors financial adviser won’t let her/him get to the 15 grand or he/she was putting in for the camera rig until the middle of next month. The investor has spent $75,000 grand of so in the past two months so they (rightly) advised him/her to wait to randomly spend another 15 grand.

I told him/her that I spend my whole paycheck before the end of the weekend so who I am to say about spending money unwisely. If had as much money as this person does then I would already be broke. He/she has already helped my a lot creatively and we’ve become good friends so even thing this complicates the hell out of my life...it’s all cool. Crazy world eh?

SO........

Two weeks is just enough time for the DP and I to get familiar with the camera and monitor and getting a workflow going to offload the files on a RAID system via laptop computer. Some may still go wrong and we not the money or piece of hardware in time for the shoot.
So do set the first day of production back and hope money will show up middle of next month?

HELL NO

Were shooting a movie HD or not and we're starting in late April just like we planned

I’ve got this other investor trying to give me more money than I need. I really only want another 10 grand or so for production value type stuff. Like maybe it’ll cost some money, but we might be able to shoot on campus in Gainesville. Or I was gonna use that money to rent a warehouse to film interiors shot on a make shift soundstage. I’ve got carpenters a plenty, hammer in hand waiting to build me some fake walls. Then we just buy some cheap furniture or raid peoples houses for dining room tables and such.

To get that money I need a perfect finished draft of the movie. This means I’m gonna spend all week writing and editing. By the end of the week we need a script locked down enough were we can cast roles for sure and start locations and doing breakdowns and all that fun stuff.
Always go with worst case scenario. As far as I’m concerned we’re shooting with DVX-100 and XL-2 right now. If you don’t see the money then it ain’t there.
I get the script tip top by the end of the week and I may be posting Friday we’re buying hvx200’s. This is that is indie filmmaking.

LOCAL PRESS isn’t holding back. I did an interview with the Jacksonville news paper today. Orlando channel 2 is coming up this week to interview me in front of a few strategically placed movie poster.

Original HILLS HAVE EYES one sheet next to THE WILD BUNCH next to OLDBOY with my Fulci signed ZOMBIE original one sheet and RE-ANIMATOR poster on other walls in my office. Behind me is my new DON’T GO INTO THE HOUSE one sheet next to a huge LOYALTY poster.

I think the placement of the LOYALTY poster (behind me) represents Adonis always looking over my shoulder. He thinks it means he’s behind cause ‘he’s got my back’.

I’m right though, because I’m the director.

That's rough, but I'm sure things will end up working out. Plus, would it really be an indie shoot without basically everything going wrong in some respect? Anyways, hope the money comes in, but if not I'm sure the movie will still looks awesome.

Re: GAINESVILLE RIPPER GOREZONE BLOG
It's all gonna work out. I got a kid offering his JVC -100u hdv camera. I pick it over the DVX/xl-2 combo. I'm blazing away at a shooting draft of the script so I can hit the Friday deadline and show to this other investor and dance the dance.

Wish I had a real producer. Adonis is doing his best, but is over his head. I'm producing more than anything right now. The script revisions are going great though. It's feeling like a real script and a damn good one at that, no ego involved when I say that. This is the best writing I've ever done and I'm writing like my life depended on it.

THat HVX isn't outa sight just yet. This is the game called indie filmmaking. I got an ace up my sleeve I might call pull out if comes down to it.

First of shooting is Saturday april 29th. Stuck in stone baby.

I'm writing, rewriting and finishing pages like my life depended on it. I'm at page 75 right now. Proofefed and 2nd drafted. Have to have the whole thing done by Friday to ask for money. I really only need 10 grand for the Camera package $6,000 camera +$1300 memory cards + $1500 plasma HD monitor 21" + $1000 for camera support and harddrives.

Blazing away at the pages. I've 2nd draftedd up to page 79 right now. I'm using final draft and so far I get a page a minute everytime I shoot a script I wrote. Hell I got over the page a minute sometimes actually.

From talking with other FInal Draft users eveyone is different. My DP (the guy who directed the horrible Predator Island availible for rent everywhere) shoots 90 minutes after writing a 120 page script.

I'm looking at 100+ pages when it's said and done Friday .

I talked to the inverstor. So far he's been enthusiastic and offered money after reading only half a script. I talked to him today (just got back in town) told him I needed 10 grand and would have a final draft for him Friday. He's reading the 79 pages I've got drafted so far. After I give him the Final Draft he'll decide on an amount of money to invest. He's knows all I want is that camera and I want to have it a few weeks before productionh, so we can have time test the hell out of that camera and our workflow (P2 flash cards transfering to laptop and raid external harddrives)

My brother ( a head programmer at EA games who's working on the Superman movie Video game, bastard gets to actually direct the actors from the movie for their videogame dialog!!!) Said he'd invest enough to buy the harddrives for the shoot and editing. Most likely two sets of 400 gig internal harddrives stuck in a n external case. That's 800 minutes of raw footage and may be all I need. SO:
$6000 for HVX200+1300 for two 4 gig P2 cards+$1500-$2000 for a plasma HD monitor= $9grand if we get tight in the negotiations.

Cross your fingers for me that I don't offend the guy in the script. I have to cross my nubs (remember the table saw incident that put this whole thing in motion)

That's the point it's hidden. I don't want a bunch of people reading this, just the Gorezoners. If word gets out I gotta shut down or at least shut up about certain things I've talked about.

Did I tell you that Andre Kapel from Brazil is officially flying to do my effects. ADonis and I can't wait to hang with ANdre again. Arc knows him. We hung out at Fantasia last year.

Re: .....
Andre is doing effects for the new Coffin Joe movie!!!! then he's even gonna split the price of the plane ticket to FLorida!!!!!! We're shooting the murder scenes last so I won't see Andre till Late July/August. He's gonna crash at my place for a few weeks and do the gore FX for the murders. HELL YEAH!!!> He's the biggest FX artist in Brazil. Never would be happening if I hadn't made friends with him at Fantasia!!!

Yeah we got lucky finding him. That was his call back after his first read at the casting call.

I had a feeling about him so I had him come over and instead of reading we shot the scene. I wanted to show all my partners in the film that he should get the job and the scene had everyone convinced. It's twice as long as that clip when finished.

Cool think is, Zack (the guy playing Danny Rolling) lives in Gainesville, but just got a new job and will be training here in Jacksonville for the next two weeks.

PERFECT!!!

He's stuck in Jacksonville and has everynight to work on the movie and most importantly rehearse with other actors we are about to hire from last weeks casting call.

NOW THATS LUCK. We're shooting in a month and I have the leaad actor everynight for the next two weeks. He also has weekends off with his new job so we are good to go as far as shooting. He's just gonna have to come up Friday or one day during the week to rehearse before each weekends shoot.

I'm writing a role that any actor would kill for. He has three different personalities. The movies only gonna be as good as his acting job. He knows this is his one chance to knock it out of the park and get some recognition. Actors who play serial killers always get the awards. MONSTER is a movie we bring up in interviews alot.

Feel free to ask questions or make comment or suggestions. Especially the kind of suggestions that are helpful. I'm stuck infront of my computer alot and I actually consider this blog part of my job making the movie.

I'm trying to make this the place where people can learn the stuff I always had questions about. Hell I still got a ton of questions.....
