for charlies mum
i find aspirin and milk used to really help the acid problem when i was a kid. i'm 18 now and after a few episode free years i'm now sick every minute of every day. if you have ever had morning sickness, this is likely how poor charlie feels beore and after an episode. as for during, i also find i can't speak, and mum always brings me a cold face washer and i sip water. the worst pain is in the head, and burning in the stomach and throat. i feel for you and him, i really do. the best thing you can ever do is just believe him nad that what is going on is real and terribly unpleasant. i'm glad to see that you have an association in the States - not much is known about CVS here in Australia.

CVS
:mickey Hello all! I have a four year old son who since around 18 months I've noticed would vomit on schedule. It started out being once a month then a year later it was once every three weeks, now he is having these bouts every two weeks. No doctors have helped, they all look at him and say 'he looks healthy, so what's wrong?' He has diahrea 6 out of 7 days also. I have just found cvsaonline.org and was so surprised! Great to know it's not just him. I still have some questions that I haven't found any answers to yet though:
1. What is the difference between CVS and abdominal migraines?
2. What problems would it do to your stomach/esophagus with such vomiting spells...I would think you could do major damage to your body?
3. If it's cyclical you aren't really going to be able to stop it right? So things like 'gravol' wouldn't work?
My son goes in soon for a stomach ultrasound (I finally found a dr who will listen!!!), but since i found this site, i'm pretty sure it'll show up with nothing. I would love to talk with anyone going through this. Thanks so much! my head is swirling with info, lol, so i hope i made sense up there :) :mickey

Re: CVS
Hello.
I know how it is to go from doc to doc without getting any real answers. And then when you finally get tests done it causes such mixed feelings. It is impossible to explain to someone who hasen't been thru the experience how you can sorta want them to find something wrong with you that will explain what is going on. It is awful to think that you go in wanting them to find something wrong with you but when you already know that you are sick and you are just wanting them to figure it out.

I have another endoscopy scheduled next month. And a spinal tap tomorrow for my headaches. It's always something it seems...... :confused

just discovered i have cvs

I have been going through hell for the last three years.(to the month, as a matter of fact). I have had every test that the doctors could think of. They actually told me to take my records to the emergency room in Madison.( I'm from a city of 55,000). I've gone over over everything until it hurts to think about and i couldn't think of what i could do or what i was doing wrong...
I was finally told by an allergist( after all the internists, specialists, endoscopy, colonoscopy, countless er docs, etc) that I may have what's called idiopathic cyclic vomiting. I really didn't have much the first time I searched on my own. The other doctors that I mentioned it to didn't say anything else of it. The other day I just decided to check one more time and I found this site.
I have been working in coordination with a family practicioner, who I haven't seen since I found all this, a chiropractor who also is helping with my diet and overall well being, and a therepist who I have been seeing since I was about 15. (I'm now 22). i had some problems as a child/teenager. I was a cutter, and I have been diagnosed as being bipolar and obsessive compulsive. The bipolar diagnosis was partly stemming from getting sick, though.
All of this started a few months after my dad died from a really gruesome and traumatic two years of cancer. I was involved with some situations during all of this that really put a huge stress on me that i didn't get to really deal with at the time.
The "interesting" thing about this is that my second cousin on my father's side has this same thing, but he has had it for 20 yrs. he's now 40. He's heard of this before a long time ago, but he's continued to have tests done and he's seen many different doctors.
I feel like I've got a better grip on this than when it started. I used to get sick for about 6 or 7 days with a 7 day recovery period. Now it's sick for about 2, really bad insomnia for about 4, with a recovery of 4 or 5 days.
I attribute this to the chiro, who is hepling with my diet. (which has been one of a strict vegetarian diet since I was in third grade). I also only drink spring water, and only drink propel fitness water or some other electrolyte water only! I eat baby food, and popsicles and anthing mellow when i'm starting to feel a bit better. I am also taking some vitamins and oils. I see the therepist at least once every two weeks, if not more.
I have been documenting my diet on occasion for the chior and it helps to make sure that I'm eating healthy. (I'm 5'5 and about 95-100 lbs, depending on how well the month is going. I get sick at least once every two or three weeks...) I haven't had to get fluids for a couple months.
I'm going to try promethazine for the pain ( more the pain that follows the puking. I'm sure I've torn muscles and my back gets so sore.(I also have a slight touch of scoliosis). My grandpa is a chiropractor,(not the one I'm seeing) and he said that because my anterior dorsals are out of alignment, which causes stomach aches and disomfort among other things.
I also wanted to let people( especially mothers of young children) know that phenergan suppositories (spelling?) help to start the recovery process and allow me to keep down fluids (most of the time). These are the way to go when everything comes back upso quickly.
I also spend all thime possible curled up hugging my knees in the shower. The water is the most soothing thing possible. The dark and the warmth make me feel a hundred times better, until I get out.
I also listen to my nature sounds machine and I use a light projector thingy to look at. I listen to a quiet cd, and wait.
Well, now that i've practically written a book, I guess I'm finished for now. Glad I found this site, it's been really helpful!:moon

living with CVS
I just discovered this site, and I have found it to be most helpful. My son is 4 years old,and has CVS.He has been hospitalized, tried meds.It has been about 43 days since he was the meds,no vomting at all.
I'm waiting for that to happen,I've cut out many things in his diet MSG,chocolate, caffeine(pop). And it seems to be working.I give him lotts of hot baths, they seem to make him feel better also.I try to stick to stick to a routine, and not sway from it.Less stress for him.:dance

Teeth
Hey,
I am a 14 year old girl that also is a CVS suffer. Every doctor is trying to stop the vomiting and that is one of the most important things, but i do have to say that protecting the teeth is also. I had went to my dentist for a cleaning and came out with a clean bill of no cavities. Right after that visit i got really sick with an episode, this one lasted on and off for about 8 months. Less than a year later i went back for another cleaning an came out with 18 cavities.
The cavities were not because of not brushing after episodes they were because when you brush after you vomit it does not get rid of the acid that is on your teeth. So every time you vomit or your child vomits start making them rinse their mouths out with baking soda and water mixed together. I know that stopping the vomiting is the first and formost thing but i dont want anyone to have to get over an episode and then have over half of their mouth pretty much drilled out and refilled. Thanks!

cyclical vomiting
Hi,

My 12 yr old sister has been suffering from CVS ever since she was about 4. She has had every test done available and only recently did the hospital doctors diagnose this as CVS. Our general practitioner is of little help, and is convinced that this condition is a psychological disorder and that she could stop it if she wanted to. He thinks that my sister is bring it on herself by excessively worrying or stressing out. I know this is wrong and also unfair to my sister. How can i make him and my parents understand the real state of this disorder?

cvs.....
My son was diagnosed with cvs this year I have had a hard time understanding it. We can send a man to the moon but we can not find a cure for this thing that has taken over our lives and mean while all I can do is hope that the next spell won't be as bad.My son is 9 yrs. old and has been hospitalized many times and finally we were told that there is nothing much that they can do other than try different meds. and hope that they may work.I'am really needing to find a support group that understands what we (my family) are going through. So if anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

CVS
Hi im Shaynie and im 15 and have had CVS for 4-5 years or maybe longer.
I think it is important to stick by him as he is growing up because for me i got bullied because of my illness. All i really wanted was someone to be able to look up to and talk to.
For me growing up with CVS has got to be the hardest thing i have ever done. Especially when you know you have nobody to comfort you when you need it.
Nobody ever understood me and how i felt and although my mum likes to think she KNOWS what’s best it feels like she is working against me.
So i think having CVS or any other chronic illness makes life harder and what we really need is someone we feel we can talk to and someone who is there for us.

The reason im telling you this is because I only just started finding people with the same illness as me and people who understand what it is like. Also finding people who don’t have the illness but is there for me 100%. This made my Illness easier to deal with. I think you and your son having that bond will make it easier for him growing up. Knowing although it might seem like the world is against you, you still have someone and for him that someone will be you.
