look closely on the cover art and see it has "GOD" written in the brain. i think tool are trying to tell us that god is a part of our brain.

Re: look closely
Or perhaps it is suggesting that what we perceive in this reality is merely an existence of which 'God' is the underlying and true core. The brain is a metaphor for our existence, for our brain is completely responsible for everything we know, feel, perceive, understand, remember and so on. That 'God' is present at the center of it all, is quite an optimistic view on life. The question is what is 'God'. The truth is that in this reality, we will never know. So all really have is ourselves and each other. We can try to connect with ourselves, connect with others, better ourselves as human beings, respect all life, have compassion, learn forgiveness and try to live our lives in the most fulfilling way possible to ourselves. Now is our reality. Now is the only tangible grounding to hold on to. Hope is the only thing that keeps us going with true meaning. To give up hope is to give up the true meaning of life.

God's on my Brain
naokly, you say "god is a part of our brain". Do you mean God exists in our brain, because we believe in Him, or actually physically part of it?

Re: God's on my Brain
I think the idea is that the concept of a god is something that originates from our unconscious mind. That is, there are no gods: any feeling we have of such comes from within ourselves.

I like archetype5's idea. but "what is god?" I think I can answer that but I cant gaurantee that it will get you anywhere. God is everything that we can conceve and everything that we can not. The living silence of nothingness.

Re: look closely
looking at tool's lyrics, it seems that they belive that we are all one mind, we are connected. also, if they write on the qabala, then they probably believe in planes. all of this is in out head and we are just a self image. god would be in our head and the astral plane and all planes above it are also in our head, we would go to heaven or hell depending on our self image of ourselves, not god's. that is why when we are "truly" sorry and ask for god to forgive us, we think he has forgiven us, making us think we are going to heaven. this is why killers can still go to heaven as long as they think it is justified. God, Satan, heaven, and hell are just in our head. but then again, so is everything else, so this is not saying god is unreal, only as unreal as our hand.

God in the brain
I'd have to say that God isn't "in" our brain, so much as our brains are in God. The brain is simply a portion of the central nervous system which is the prime motivator of the biological "Tool" ;) called the body. The body is merely a tool used by the mind to interact with and in the physical world. The mind connects to the body through the brain. The mind is a reflection of the mind of God. Ever hear of the holographic universe? The brain is like a small piece of holographic film through which "light" is projected to create a 3-dimensional picture. We only see the small portion of the picture near our bit of film, but every bit of film contains the information of the whole picture. The whole picture is God. Does this jibe with anyone?

I don't know, I prefer to think that I will know; but I agree that the way that I will know, is not a way that you could know. Because that's the schism, right, the breakdown in our communication? If we think we're different, it's harder to realize that we're the same.
Terence McKenna posited some interesting thoughts in my brain on this subject ... that in ancient times, people believed that the voice inside their head, the source of inspiration and of answers, was the voice of their king (alive or dead). This became a problem when there was cross-continental or intercontinental travel, where suddenly there were other people whose mental voices were from different kings, suggesting alternate or contrary advice. This led (maybe) to the creation of universal deities, up to the Greek and Roman "gods" ... then through the monotheism of Judao-Christianity, up to the Ego of modern psychology. Strange to think that all this confusion and heavy debate (not to mention war and death and oppression) is all about trying to figure out what this voice is and where it's coming from.
Similarly, while I was scouring the 'net trying to figure out what forty-six & 2 had to do with anything, I stumbled across the idea of the evolution of DNA, that our 23 pairs of chromosomes (ie. 44+2) mightn't have been always 23; that we've possibly evolved from 22 (42+2) or less, and that the next big evolutionary step would involve the addition of extra chromosomes (46+2). The document I was reading suggested that some aboriginal tribes in Australia still have only 22 chromosome pairs, and the significant difference it makes is that they are unable to recognize that anything external to their body is actually apart from themself -- something I'd imagine would be apparent if one believes in the interconnectivity of every thing.
Makes you wonder, hm?

But, to address the original topic about the word GOD appearing in the cover art ...... (first) I bet it correlates to the final mirror in Alex Grey's Sacred Mirrors project; and (second) are you entirely sure that it's in the brain? I don't have the artwork here in front of me, but once I get a chance to look at it, here's what I'm going to ask: is it pointing to a specific part of the brain (ie. the pineal gland, pituitary gland, etc)? is it pointing to something that might be independent of its relation to the brain (ie. Da'ath)?
Makes me wonder. Ha.
