I think it's public because in order to make it private, you need to pay for "gold community" (and that gives you a whole packet of special features).
As to why everything was deleted, I have nary a clue.

Janest didn't delete everything, just moved it all so the Public can't see what we thought was private. I'm sure if we fork over the money to EzBoard to make this private again, Janest can restore our threads.
