did you have some cute smileys, maybe older posticons, that were remotely linked from the cwm smiley site? Are they now large banners saying 'don't link to forbidden.net'? (or 'don't go to k11.com')
This is NOTHING to do with ezboard, and it is not a bug. This is what happens when you remotely link an image from someone else's server. You ar at their mercy, basically, because they can upload a new file to that same url and you will see the new image.
The host that cwm used to use, ragesofsanity.com, has been bought by an adult site. They bought that domain I guess and any old links to ANY image on the ragesofsanity domain will get you that huge banner. There is no way to get rid of those old images, besides editing each individual post where they show and unchecking the posticon box. If you had the images in a custom title, you cannot edit them out at all.
This is the new address for the crack whore monkey smiley collection: www.mysmilies.com/
it is a good resource but they seem to change the urls of their images very frequently. Although they do allow you to remote link to them, the short term conveneince turns into long term hassles when you have to redo your posticons or emoticons every month. I suggest downloading the images you like to your computer and uploading them to your own server/image host where you have more control over them.
this can happen with any remotely linked image, it will work fine for a long time and then all of a sudden start showing as a huge banner. Sometimes this happens when you exceed your allotted bandwidth for a particular host. Many people also use this method to 'punish' people who steal their bandwidth. If you are remote linking images from someone else's server, you are at their mercy and they can change that image to anything they want. This is another good reason why it is best to only link from your own webspace or with the permission of another host.
If it is in the posticon field or personal photo, you can edit the posts later and remove them, but if it a personal icon for example or a custom title, that cannot be edited out of a post and the personal icon may show in the started by column on the topic listing page.
Your choices are:
1. change the security to not show personal icons at all for that forum
2. If your board is gold, you can use a javascript to replace the old image url with something new. p079.ezboard.com/fcooltip...ID=3.topic
this FAQ topic explains how.
A similar thing has recently happened with another smiley site
http://jeeptalk.org
Any any images which were hotlinked to this site is now being replaced by a very large transparent image which is actually the 404 page not found image at jeeptalk.org. This may cause the page to not display properly and stretch out the tables. If you edit out the smiley it should go back to normal.
This is not hacking. If your smilies have suddenly changed in old posts, where a normal smiley used to show and now it is the big empty space, this has not been changed in your board's control center. This was switched at the host's end and is not something ezboard has control over.
If you have lots of old posts showing the offending image and don't want to edit each one, you can use an image replacement javascript to get rid of those images.
This is another reminder why it's not a good idea to hotlink. Even if the site says they allow it, you never know what will happen in the future with those images. At best you might end up with red x's, at worst you might get porno images replacing your smileys in old posts, too many to edit them all out. Edited by: ezGoalieAunt at: 2/24/07 21:14
